Winter 2011 GN positions/interviews in Houston, TX

U.S.A. Texas

Hi, just wanted to start a trend about where you applied, call backs, interviews and who all got hired.

Would love to hear your stories and anything else to help other graduating nurses.

I heard back from HCHD yesterday and will have my second interview tomorrow for LBJ and another one for Ben Taub next Tuesday.

They are probably still making decisions, so there's still hope that you will hear back from them.

Good luck mam. That is awesome. What units did you choose?

Did you go to the first orientation or the second orientation at LBJ?

Did they email or call back?

I hope I do hear something, if it is meant to be.

I graduate in December with my ADN GPA 3.25. I have not heard anything back from any of the internships I have applied to.. and I have tried contacting recruiters and following up..but nothing

Hchd starting calling for 2nd interviews for med surge first. They said other units have not recieve everything on interviewees to start calling yet.

Ok so they start calling for women services too. Hchd

This is what worries me. I will graduate with an ADN and a 3.4 GPA but I'm not sure if I will be considered with so many BSN students applying for the same position. Anybody got any ideas to set yourself apart from the crowd other than GPA, prior work experience, and/or recommendation letters?

Nope... I graduated in August (ADN) with a 3.5 and very high HESI scores (top 1% in the nation), prior volunteer experience (hospital), and multiple recommendation letters... None of this has helped. From my experience, recruiters aren't even looking at your individual qualifications which is crazy! I understand the whole BSN vs. ADN and having the higher degree... BUT... I'm already enrolled in RN-BSN program and I have all the skills necessary to do bedside nursing. The BSN only helps for management! I know because I already have my course list and it's all research/management. Patients don't care if you have APA experience writing papers... They do however care if you can save their life with ACLS protocol (which I am certified to do ;))... Now my rant is over :lol2:... Bottom line is, I think it's the luck of the draw! BSNs will have an advantage, which they should because they've put in the extra work, but last I checked we all take the SAME test to get the SAME license! It's just all around hard right now!

See Plover, you still have a chance to hear back from them soon! :)

And yes they are just interviewing for Med/Surg and Women's Services, so they should definitely be contacting everyone else next week.

I agree Camemile that it is mostly the luck of the draw. I have a BSN, and so far I have only heard back from HCHD regarding an interview. I have applied to several other hospitals, but have yet to hear back from anyone else. There are several of my classmates who have not yet received a single interview.

We just have to hang in there and keep the faith until we get that one good offer! It will happen regardless of whether you have a BSN or an ADN.

OK I got an update from MD Anderson today. The recruiter said they should be having some decisions in the next couple of days. I pray this happens nxt wk. On the other hand, I will suggest to all new grads to look outside of houston even in other states. The only thing that matters is experience. when you get that you can now pick and choose what hospital you see yourself being in the next 5 or even 10 yrs. Being picky as a newgrad wont get you anywhere at this point in time. Remember you can always switch fields after you get 1 or 2yrs of experience in nursing. I understand some people cant just pick up and leave due to personal things going on in their life but if you dnt have any attachment that will hinder you moving, look into other places especially little weird towns that no one will want to go and have at the back of your mind that is only temporary. If you get an offer, look into it more closely and accept it if it suits you. Do not wait for your dream hospital to call you. This is coming from someone who graduated last year Dec 2010 and just got and offer to start early Dec of this yr. I was being pick n stuff n I had to wait a whole year but I'm very grateful that I got an offer. I posted a link earlier. Some of you all will find that useful.

Here is my undergrad stats

1st degree was in Chemistry. G.p.a of 3.8

2nd degree BSN...G.p.a of 3.7.

I got my BSN in 1 yr as I attended an accelerated program in houston. I passed my nclex on the 1st trial. If employment was based on good grades and g.p.a a lot of nurses will not be unemployed right now. We are a smart group of individuals.

Specializes in ICU.

Harsh facts but

1.) Since there are so many nurses BSN/ADN every semester being pumped out of all the nurses school, the hospitals can afford to be picky :-(

2) GPA does count, refer to point one. This nursing shortage does not affect the med center haha.

3) I agree with accelerated sometimes a job anywhere beats being picky without a job.... also apply to the outlying hospitals because competition in the med center is crazy... with 500+ applicants for positions

4) Hmmm, to get some interviews I literally just walked into the hospitals with my resume and talked to the manager of the unit. (I actually got 2 interviews this way)

Specializes in Emergency.

I don't think GPA is what got me my interview at all because it's not stellar. I just applied extra early and CONSTANTLY bugged the recruiters. I now have a job at a level 1 trauma a facility in the ER...maybe it's because of the area I'm in...but good luck to all of you.
