UTHSC-Houston Fall 2012 Applicants

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hello everyone! This thread is for everyone applying to the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. I believe they will be accepting applications from January 15-April 1, so the sooner the better! Their admission requirements are pretty standard:

Minimum Pre-Req Gpa: 2.75

Minimum Science Gpa: 3.0

Minimum HESI A2 score: 75% or higher on all required sections - math, reading comprehension, vocabulary/general knowledge, grammar, anatomy and physiology, critical thinking.

My info is really not that competitive, but I'm going to give it a shot anyways -

Pre-Req Gpa: 3.30

Science Gpa: 3.0 (Barely cutting it! :crying2: )

Overall Gpa: 3.28

Hesi score: 93.3% overall, with my lowest score being a 90.

My gpa is not the best, but I still have 3 more classes to finish this semester, and I'm aiming for all A's! I think the best thing I have going for me is my HESI scores.

Anyone else planning on applying? What are your stats? Any questions? Lets hear them, and good luck to all who are applying!

I need some opinion from you guys. If I get accepted this semester but if I reject it, do you think that I will have a good chance of getting accepted again in Spring? This is why I'm uncertain of what to do, because I'm not ready just yet to start, but it would suck if I reject acceptance and then I can't get accepted again.

@Warning-Sign: I don't see why if you have the chops to get in one semester you wouldn't have them the next. I'm sure that there are lots of people who get accepeted, and, for one reason or another, have to reapply. I'd say, go with your gut. It's almost always right. I first applied for fall 2010 but something didn't feel quite right. I got an interview and everything. But I freaked out because it just felt wrong. So, I went and finished my first degree and here I am. So, long story short (too late right?) I do think that you'll have a chance of getting in again.

Thanks everybody! I'm going to apply to TWU as a back up and I already have everything they want except taking the TEAS. I'm going to take it this summer because their deadline isn't until September for the Spring. I made a 94% composite score on HESI, but I've heard people saying the TEAS is much harder. Anyone else have any experience or suggestions concerning the TEAS??

@nici0513 The TEAS was much more difficult. I made a 95 or 96 composite on the HESI and an 80 on the TEAS. That is competitive range for TWU...they like to see a 78 or better per the Admissions Counselor I spoke with today. Hope that helps some! I would get the TEAS study book, it is a lot like the test in my opinion. There are a lot of random questions, just to warn you!!!

The TEAS is soo much harder than the HESI. When I took it, you couldn't choose which sections to do first. You had to do the sections as they gave them to you. And I don't think that it's that much harder per se, it's just that the kind of questions they ask are different. So I'd say get a study guide and take some practice tests. That was one mistake I made. I got the guide, but I didn't do all the sections. I thought, I'm good in Reading Comprehension so I'll just skip that part. WRONG! Just make yourself familiar with their format and I think that will help. And be careful of time. Practice your math (I got used to using a calculator and I was not allowed to use one on the test). Just stuff like that. Good luck!

Thanks Krique, you have put my mind at ease. You are right, I will do what I think is best and not worry about being accepted a second time so much.

Thanks for the feedback on the TEAS, I'll definitely get the study guide and do the practice test! I'm not taking any classes this summer, so that will be my focus.

Unfortunately, if you've taken patho or pharm at a junior college, it's likely that it won't transfer to your BSN. You would have to have taken a Junior level course in order for it to transfer. The sophomore level courses that my classmates took at HCC or LoneStar counted towards their pre-req GPAs and credits to get in, but were not evaluated as Junior level courses so they are currently retaking them with the rest of us.

Good luck again to you all waiting, it wasn't so long ago when we were where you are now. Keep yourselves busy and enjoy the rest of your time before you start the program. When it finally happens, it's unreal to see that letter. Well worth what you've been through.

@heavykevy:

Thanks for the encouragement, can't wait until I get to start ANY nursing program..I will be like a little girl on the first day of kindergarten, LOL! Regarding taking pharm at Lone Star, My Micro professor advised me to at least try getting them to accept my pharm credit with UTA because UTA asked the one professor that teaches patho at LoneStar NH to write their patho curriculum for them because it was so great. So, the patho course taught at UTA is the same as LoneStar NH. She said that the whole science department has a great reputation with UTA, but specifically the North Harris campus because most of their science professors have been there 20+ years. I'm meeting with my nursing advisor at UTA on Wednesday and have to bring her my syllabus from Pharm so they can go over it and decide if they will accept it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed because I worked my butt off for that A and sure don't want to take it again!

Worst case scenario is that you'll be sitting for Pharm with your new classmates learning many drugs that you already know. I'm sure there will be a lot of stuff you still need to learn in the pharm for nursing course, but any advantage you can get (aka already having taken a pharm course) is going to be a huge help that I guarantee you'll appreciate!

so nothing happened this week but april is getting closer and my mind is getting crazier.

Did anybody get accepted to any other schools that they applied to yet?

(UTHSC is usually the last one to send acceptance from my experience)
