Texans attitudes toward interacial couples

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hi everyone! I was considering possibly moving to Texas after my first year of nursing. The thing is, I have never lived anywhere besides Connecticut and Washington D.C. I am married to a wonderful man who happens to be of another race than me. In connecticut, we get subtle glances but nothing rude. i was wondering, If I were to move to Texas, how will we be received. Will the neighbors burn a cross on our yard (I know that this sounds close minded but it's a real concern) or will we be blatantly harrassed? Any info anyone can give would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Pokey (soon to be GN)

I live in Dallas and I am in the same boat. I am a white female who only dates black men and I have NEVER had any problems here. I come from a small town in western KY where the people will stop and stare and make rude comments but I have never experienced that in Dallas. I think you would be MUCH more likely to experience things of that nature in little small towns. Good luck to ya!

there always be some people that will have something to say... ....you live your life as you want ...

dicrimination will confront you one way or another ..

its how you react to it ... :rotfl:

believe me it has improved since the 70th ...lol..

so do whats best for you ..

ITS YOUR LIFE ... :balloons:

I have noticed in my area that the people really don't care about being in an interracial marriage, as I am in one myself. In my particular area, people are more worried about what's going on with people on the Mexico side of the border than with what happens here. Now, some people are just rude, and that's that. And of course, there will always be somebody who doesn't approve, but you will find that people don't really care.

Pokey, with your husband's line of work, it would NOT be a problem with finding a job here. And of course you would NOT have a problem finding a job, either. LOL.

Best of wishes to you and your family. Remember, you gotta decide what's best for you and the family. Consider support systems, how far you will be from family, day care situations, etc. Anything and everything matters. Let me know if I can help.

Thanks Brandy:) Guess what? I just finished my final and I am done with school (at least for now)!!!

Graduation is just 28 days away!!!

YOU ARE GETTING WHERE YOU WANT TO BE :rotfl: and keep on going

people who discriminate are IGNORANT and usually dissatisfied with their own live...

PEACE

Some people have been raised by bigots and are still open minded enough to get to know someone of another race and get past the prejudice. I was raised like this, and have overcome that raising. I judge people based on their own behavior and merits. There's trash of all colors, just like there's admirable people of all colors.

And yes, some small minded people are just jerks who like to put down someone who is different than them in some way. They don't only discriminate racially either....I wasn't born in Texas so I will always be a 'damn Yankee' to some elitist natural born Texans who think they are superior in some way. I have neighbors who sent my 4 yr old home crying after being called a 'dirty words..".Damn Yankee Bastard."

I just stay away from them...and to be honest, very few of my best friends here have been born here...thankfully there are lots of 'transplants' here in Texas...so we don't have to endure the home grown bigots...LOL!!

Best wishes to you here...Texas has been pretty good to me and my family in most respects. :)

I TOTALLY agree with this post. My father and his side of the family are HUGE racists but if you ask them why they couldn't give you an answer if they had to. I have never been a racist and like the above post says, there's good and bad in EVERYTHING. Just be yourself and the world will get over it. You can't please all the people all the time and you shouldn't try to!

I lived in Texas, in Ft. Hood, but traveled to Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas ALL the time. On and near military posts there are ALOT of interracial couples and its the norm. I am a black female whos in a relationship with a white male for the past 2 yrs. We haven't had any confrontations. I normally date white males, and havent noticed any prejudices in Texas, now that we are on the east coast I see it sometimes but not all the times. Near Austin and San Antonio its very cultural in those cities so you shouldnt have any problems (everything isn't perfect though).

Hi, I live in texas actually houston, i've been hear for a few yrs now, and i know it's some many different nationalities here u fit right in. :coollook:

I'm in TX .. there are ignorant people everywhere but I dont' know of anyone having any real problems ! My husband is jewish (not really interracial but still) and we haven't had a problem.
