NEED feedback from El Centro/Northlake RN grads. and current students

I have applied to RN program. I am reading so many threads about how professors are " out to get" students, and try to "kick students out of nursing programs" Also how students get sent home from clinicals. None of this changes my goal to be a successful RN, but just wondering, are the professors really this mean? I don't know anything about clinicals and such, what would happen to make an instructor send one home from clinical? Just wondering so I can psyche myself up and develop a "thicker skin" before starting progrm. :uhoh3:

I think that I may need some more pre requ.'s for brookhaven program. For EC we need API, math1314, ENg 1301, Hprs, and Psych I. If I am not accepted, I will check into Brookhaven-Thankyou!:D

I'm at NLC, graduating in May. I have not seen any professor that was "out to get" a student. During clinical, I have only witnessed a single student get sent home, and it was due to the fact that they didn't do any paperwork prior to coming to the hospital and was expected to be giving meds that day. Seriously, how can you expect to give meds if you don't know anything about your patient or what you'll be giving??? If you do the work, you will be successful. Good luck to you! :yeah:

I've heard all the horror stories too but I have had nothing but a great experience. I attend Northlake and everyone there seems to be pretty happy with their instructors. I do have a friend at El Centro that is having the worst experience ever. I feel so bad for her and her classmates. I think it just depends on what instructor you have. I tell everyone to not make judgements until you experience it yourself. I read on ratemyprofessors.com that my clincal instructor this semester was horrible, mean and makes you cry. So far, she has been so pleasant to all of us and seems to really enjoy teaching us. I agree with you though, if this is your goal, like it is mine, I can grin and bear it for 4 semesters. As long as you study and do what is expected from you, you'll be fine.

I am currently in 2nd semester at EC. I had one of the hardest instructors for clinical last semester Ms. G. And I made it. If you have your work done, then you are fine. The teachers want to see that you are making the effort. It is hard and a lot of work, but put yourself out there and get your work done timely and you will be just fine.

Most teachers are very particular about time also. Don't be late to classes, especially clinical.

Apart from the fact that my schedule keeps changing, my first sem at EC is ok so far. I have some friends who are really having it rough because the lecture exams isn't what you would normally expect and some clinical proff are much stricter than others!! Once you learn what the instructor expects of you, then all you can do is your best!!

Yea I've had some really nice ones and some real stinkers. One made me cry but I was just having a bad day already and she set me off. For 1st semester I had Mr. McCarty - he is the nicest instructor by far! I definitely would recommend him. And good news is...4th semester you can be with a preceptor and not an instructor! I love my preceptor and actually enjoy going to clinical now. Just 10 more weeks and I am done! Good luck to you. Be prepared...it's going to SUCK but it will be so worth it and you will be so proud of your accomplishment!
