I am a soon to be graduate and am looking to relocate from philadelphia to houston and am wondering what opportunities are availiable and if it's worth is.

There are plenty of jobs both inpatient and outpatient, salaries are reasonable and cost of living is very low. But, as a former mid atlantic area dweller let me tell you- it is HOT here. Lose all your winter gear and hope you look good in shorts 'cause between the heat and the near 80% humidity every day, you will never need a coat again;)

Hello!

There are definitely a lot of opportunities down here in Houston, specifically within the Texas Medical Center (located just south of downtown). The hospitals there are awesome and the patients come from all around the world. And yes, it is definitely hot down here, but you get used to it and the winters are nice and mild :)

Hey, thanks guys. I appreciate the heads up.

I'll keep the heat in mind. What are saleries running down there. Philadelphia is paying pretty good. 28 an hour I'm told but that's without diff's etc. Chester is starting at like 30.

Also, any info about the VA down there? I was thinking about working with Veterans. Then again I don't really know what I want to do for sure.

The VA is the largest in the world to my knowledge, and as far as salaries- I think you will find them comparable or better than where you are now. My wife is making about 36/hr with 6 years of experience. (as in all areas the closer to the medical center you work, the higher the salaries.) But when you combine the salary with the fact that there are no state income taxes and overall cost of living is lower, your dollars go much farther.

$36 an hour? Is that a base salary or does it include shift differential? We had assumed the pay was much lower in Texas verses here in the north east.

The pay rates are typically lower in Texas versus the higher cost-of-living states.

I'm well aware of that fact. $36/hr seemed to be a much higher salary than we expected to find anywhere in TX. I wanted to know if that was a base salary or with the shift differential factored in. $36/hr is on par with the salary nurses make here in NJ.

$36 an hour as a base is actually quite common here in Houston. You will not get that as a new grad but as a nurse with a few years experience you can get that.

I moved from PA to TX 2 years ago---

The pay is much higher in Texas. At, least, with all of my experiences so far.

I am not hearing anything about working conditions, patient to nurse ratio, self scheduling and benefits? Any input would be appreciated.
