  1. MD Anderson is in the middle of a hiring freeze. I work there and that is the official news from the powers that be. I also talked to a soon-to-be new grad who had just finished the interviewing process and was extended an offer to start work when she graduates in May. However, she failed to accept the offer before the hiring freeze was announced (she was 1 day late) and her offer was revoked. Its tough, but the economy will recover and things will turn around. Just need to be persistent.
  2. I just graduated in Dec 2008 and my class was the first required to take the nursing jurisprudence exam. It is a simple, 50 question on-line computer exam that you can take at home, open notes. It is not difficult, and it is simply to ensure that you know the laws that govern the practice in nursing in the state of Texas. I took it after I graduated. No need to worry about it while trying to get through school.
  3. Hello! I just graduated with my BSN from TWU Houston a week ago. Like every nursing program, it has it's kinks, but I personally think it is one of the best. Because the campus is located in the medical center, we use a lot of the large teaching institutions in the TMC to do our clinicals, and that makes for some really awesome teaching opportunities. You get to see some of the sickest patients and work along side some really experienced nurses who are used to taking students under their wings. The quality of your clinical experiences will make or break your schooling experience, and TWU-Houston has some great clinical sites. Not only that, many of the faculty are employeed at the local institutions (like MD Anderson, St. Luke's, Methodist, Memorial Hermann, Ben Taub etc...) and they are wonderful when it comes to helping you network, giving advice on good floors to work on, and helping you get good summer internship opportunities. Let me know if you have any other questions!
  4. Hello and Good Morning! I am a nursing student that is to graduate in December of this year. I am starting to consider my options for employment and I am really interesting in Oncology Nursing. Does anyone work at, or know anything about Memorial Hermann- Memorial City Hospital? Is this a good hospital? Is it friendly to new graduates who need mentoring and guidance? What about their GN program? Do they encourage BSN students to go back to grad school? I know that there are a lot of great opportunities down in the Medical Center, but the drive for someone who lives on the west side is killer, and gas is only getting more expensive. I would love to talk to someone who works here. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!
  5. I am a senior 1 at TWU and we have three clinicals for both the senior 1 and senior 2 semesters. I am taking a pedi clinical all day thursday, a communities clinical all day friday and a mental wellness clinical all day saturday. Lectures are Monday and Tuesday and we go to the hospital to select a patient on Wednesday. I can't wait till spring break.
  6. Wow. With that GPA and NET score you're in. Seriously, you have nothing to be afraid of. A lot of my class mates had around a 3.6 or 3.7. And don't worry about your age. Your energy and passion will more than make up for any youth. I'm 20 and my friend is 19. Both of us are more than holding our own with the other students, and the differences in age among students makes for a diverse class with lots of maturity and life experiences to learn from. I really enjoy the older students in my class. Some are late 40s and I think we have one that is 50. But they're awesome and they bring a lot of life experience and advice to the table.
  7. Hello! There are definitely a lot of opportunities down here in Houston, specifically within the Texas Medical Center (located just south of downtown). The hospitals there are awesome and the patients come from all around the world. And yes, it is definitely hot down here, but you get used to it and the winters are nice and mild :)
  8. Hey bjane, It sounds like you stand a really good chance, more so than you give yourself credit for. May I ask which campus (Hhouston or Denton) that you are applying to. I did not take my pre-reqs in Denton and the vast majority of us here on the Houston campus did not. Keep your chin up, I bet that you will be pleasantly suprised :)
  9. Hello! While I have not officially worked there, I did have the opportunity to do a clinical rotation at Ben Taub last semester. I was on a med surg floor and I had a really great experience. The patient load is extremely culturally diversified and we often had to use translators. The nurses that I got to shadow were awesome. Some of them were really helpful in giving us pointers and tips on how to best do things and really great about allowing us to follow along as they did procedures that we had not seen before. Even though all the nurses were busy (with about 6 patients each), they still found ways to have fun and keep laughing through it all. Best of luck with your new job!
  10. Hello, I just completed my first semester at TWU Houston. The school and the teachers are awesome, I love it. I think that the cut off for my entering class was a 3.75 but that is what I heard from others, so its not official. I would suggest retaking any science that you did not get an A in over the summer, specifically anatomy & physiology, microbiology and chemistry. When it comes to taking Pathophysiology, a good foundation in A&P is so critical. Best of luck... let me know if you have any questions about the school :)
  11. Hello! I too am starting nursing in January (@ TWU-Houston) and they provide the CPR classes for the students. Check with your school, generally they provide the CPR for Health Care Providers class for the students to take. I think they offer ours on Jan 9, 10, and 11... but I could be wrong on those dates. I guess I'll find out more tomorrow at orientation.
  12. Hey thanks, I do actually have a question. I was looking at the class schedules and I noticed that Pathophysiology is only offered at night and goes to almost 9:00. What do students do for transportation. Do they drive? Where is it safe to park at night that is close to the building? ~Thanks for any advice :)
  13. Hey guys, I thought I'd start a thread and see if I can meet some of my new classmates. I'm so excited! Orientation is on Friday and before you know it January 16th will be here!

Has anyone else who applied to TWU-Houston and who lives in Houston gotten their letter yet? I know they mail them from Denton so it should take maybe 4 days to get here. Good heavens... I really want to get that letter!!!
