Which hospitals claim to be on a hiring freeze?
MD Anderson is in the middle of a hiring freeze. I work there and that is the official news from the powers that be. I also talked to a soon-to-be new grad who had just finished the interviewing process and was extended an offer to start work when she graduates in May. However, she failed to accept the offer before the hiring freeze was announced (she was 1 day late) and her offer was revoked. Its tough, but the economy will recover and things will turn around. Just need to be persistent.

New Jurisprudence Exam
I just graduated in Dec 2008 and my class was the first required to take the nursing jurisprudence exam. It is a simple, 50 question on-line computer exam that you can take at home, open notes. It is not difficult, and it is simply to ensure that you know the laws that govern the practice in nursing in the state of Texas. I took it after I graduated. No need to worry about it while trying to get through school.

Texas Women's University
Hello! I just graduated with my BSN from TWU Houston a week ago. Like every nursing program, it has it's kinks, but I personally think it is one of the best. Because the campus is located in the medical center, we use a lot of the large teaching institutions in the TMC to do our clinicals, and that makes for some really awesome teaching opportunities. You get to see some of the sickest patients and work along side some really experienced nurses who are used to taking students under their wings. The quality of your clinical experiences will make or break your schooling experience, and TWU-Houston has some great clinical sites. Not only that, many of the faculty are employeed at the local institutions (like MD Anderson, St. Luke's, Methodist, Memorial Hermann, Ben Taub etc...) and they are wonderful when it comes to helping you network, giving advice on good floors to work on, and helping you get good summer internship opportunities. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital- Houston, TX
Hello and Good Morning! I am a nursing student that is to graduate in December of this year. I am starting to consider my options for employment and I am really interesting in Oncology Nursing. Does anyone work at, or know anything about Memorial Hermann- Memorial City Hospital? Is this a good hospital? Is it friendly to new graduates who need mentoring and guidance? What about their GN program? Do they encourage BSN students to go back to grad school? I know that there are a lot of great opportunities down in the Medical Center, but the drive for someone who lives on the west side is killer, and gas is only getting more expensive. I would love to talk to someone who works here. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

Lectures are Monday and Tuesday and we go to the hospital to select a patient on Wednesday. I can't wait till spring break.

TWU Spring 2008
Wow. With that GPA and NET score you're in. Seriously, you have nothing to be afraid of. A lot of my class mates had around a 3.6 or 3.7. And don't worry about your age. Your energy and passion will more than make up for any youth. I'm 20 and my friend is 19. Both of us are more than holding our own with the other students, and the differences in age among students makes for a diverse class with lots of maturity and life experiences to learn from. I really enjoy the older students in my class. Some are late 40s and I think we have one that is 50. But they're awesome and they bring a lot of life experience and advice to the table.

Houston relocation
Hello! There are definitely a lot of opportunities down here in Houston, specifically within the Texas Medical Center (located just south of downtown). The hospitals there are awesome and the patients come from all around the world. And yes, it is definitely hot down here, but you get used to it and the winters are nice and mild :)

TWU Spring 2008
Hey bjane, It sounds like you stand a really good chance, more so than you give yourself credit for. May I ask which campus (Hhouston or Denton) that you are applying to. I did not take my pre-reqs in Denton and the vast majority of us here on the Houston campus did not. Keep your chin up, I bet that you will be pleasantly suprised :)

Views on Ben Taub
Hello! While I have not officially worked there, I did have the opportunity to do a clinical rotation at Ben Taub last semester. I was on a med surg floor and I had a really great experience. The patient load is extremely culturally diversified and we often had to use translators. The nurses that I got to shadow were awesome. Some of them were really helpful in giving us pointers and tips on how to best do things and really great about allowing us to follow along as they did procedures that we had not seen before. Even though all the nurses were busy (with about 6 patients each), they still found ways to have fun and keep laughing through it all. Best of luck with your new job!

TWU Spring 2008
Hello, I just completed my first semester at TWU Houston. The school and the teachers are awesome, I love it. I think that the cut off for my entering class was a 3.75 but that is what I heard from others, so its not official. I would suggest retaking any science that you did not get an A in over the summer, specifically anatomy & physiology, microbiology and chemistry. When it comes to taking Pathophysiology, a good foundation in A&P is so critical. Best of luck... let me know if you have any questions about the school :)

CPR Class in Houston
Hello! I too am starting nursing in January (@ TWU-Houston) and they provide the CPR classes for the students. Check with your school, generally they provide the CPR for Health Care Providers class for the students to take. I think they offer ours on Jan 9, 10, and 11... but I could be wrong on those dates. I guess I'll find out more tomorrow at orientation.

TWU Houston Spring 2007
Hey thanks, I do actually have a question. I was looking at the class schedules and I noticed that Pathophysiology is only offered at night and goes to almost 9:00. What do students do for transportation. Do they drive? Where is it safe to park at night that is close to the building? ~Thanks for any advice :)

Has anyone else who applied to TWU-Houston and who lives in Houston gotten their letter yet? I know they mail them from Denton so it should take maybe 4 days to get here. Good heavens... I really want to get that letter!!!

TWU spring07
Hey guys, I applied to TWU-Houston for Spring of 07 and I haven't heard anything yet. I feel sorry for the mail man, he probably thinks I'm stalking him by the way I run like a wild woman to the mail box every day! Eeeekkkkkkkkk... where is that mail man?!?!?!

Mom needs advice please!!!
Hey, a little trick that helps a lot to prevent getting flustered when doing MC questions is to cover up the answer choices and just read the question. Have her come up with the correct answer without even looking at the choices, then uncover the choices and choose the one that is closest to the answer in your head. If she has no problem with the fill in the black format, this little trick might work. Hope this helps, best of luck :)

TWU Spring 2007
Yeah, I was looking over the website and I saw that open house. I think I might go just so I can snoop around the place :) and get my bearings in the med center.

Questions for TWU-Houston students
Hello, I just applied for TWU-Houston Spring of 2007 and I have some questions for those of you who are already going to school there. Any and all advice would be greately appreciated! 1. What do ya'll do for transportation to and from school: Metro bus, electric rail, car pool or do you drive in to the medical center and park? What works best? (I live on the NW side of houston @ Barker/Hwy 290 area) 2. Are all of the classes offered during the day or are there some classes that are only offered at night? Looking at past schedules it seems that Pathophysiology is only offered during the evening or in the summer. 3. What do you think of the new building? :wink2: 4. Are all of the clinicals in the med center or do we have to drive to other facilities in the greater Houston area? 5. Regular back pack or rolly back pack? What works best? Thank you so much for any tips/advice/pointers. They are all greatly appreciated :)

TWU Spring 2007
Hey Babynurse83, How's pathophysiology going for you? I didn't realize that we could take it before we got into nursing school. Is it a really tough class?

TWU Spring 2007
Hey!!!!! I sent off my application for TWU- Houston for Spring 2007 and now I am waiting for that precious letter!!! I think it is supposed to come sometime early November. I am soooooo excited and sooooo scared all at the same time :). I went down over the summer to tour the medical center and downtown Houston with my dad. I was hoping to get to see inside the new TWU building, but they still were doing some construction so I just got to look at it from the outside. It looks incredible! I can't wait... I am finishing 6 hours of pre-reqs this fall and it seems like it is going to drag by. I guess I'll try to relax this semester as much as I can, I know the spring will probably be crazy :)

How many applicants are you "competing" against?
Texas Women's University- Houston had 1,800 applicants for the Fall 2005 semester and they accepted 80. It is based on GPA and NET score. And I got that statistic from the admissions coordinator to the BSN program!

Should I take A&P 1 during summer semester?
Hey, I also took A&P 1 over the summer and I was very glad that I did it. It was 8:00-12:20 every day, Monday through Thursday and it was moderately intense. It helped me alot to just have that one class to focus on and then a three day weekend to catch up on notes and flashcards. Best of luck in your decision!

TWU question
Hey, I had this same question. I am taking my prerequisite classes at Cy-Fair college in NHMCCD and they offered not a single class that would fill the requirement. So I went to look at the catalog for Houston Community College and they offer a couple of classes that fit the requirement. I just signed up for Psychology of Women (PSYC 2374) and am taking it via distance education. For multicultural studies I am also having to take cultural anthropology. Also for TWU- Houston the counselor said that you must have these two courses completed before you enter the nursing school. Hope that helps!
