Hard time finding a job in DFW area.

U.S.A. Texas

Hello, I moved from Colorado to Dallas 3 months ago. I checked online and I noticed there where a lot of jobs openings that did not required experience so I thought getting a job was going to be easy but I was wrong. I applied everywhere I applied at parkland, baylor, nursing homes, rehabs without luck. I graduated in 2011 and took my nclex in 2012 and then I moved to another country because my husband got a job offer so I don't have experience. I don't know if that could be one of the reasons why I'm not getting calls or interviews. I was thinking on taking a refresher course to see if that helps. Does any of you have any tips, suggestions or comments that could help me. Thank you!!!

The fact that you became licensed in 2012 and possess no nursing work experience is the precise reason you are not receiving any callbacks. There's an industry term to describe nurses who graduated several years ago but have never worked as nurses: they're referred to as the 'old new grads.'

The DFW area has a surplus of inexperienced nurses and not enough jobs to go around. The graduating class of 2014 is receiving priority in hiring.

My suggestion to you is to be willing to accept lengthy commutes to facilities far away from where you live. Apply in places that are desperate for nurses such as Tyler, Longview, Marshall, Lawton, Ardmore, Mineral Wells, and Weatherford.

@Thecommuter than you very much for your response. Do you think if I take a refresher course will I have possibilities to get a job in the metroplex. Thank you very much.

Try applying at HCA Denton Regional, it's a distance but it's better than nothing. They just started looking at applications and scheduling interviews. I've been applying everywhere also and I graduated in May (ADN) and passed my boards in October. It's tough!

Good luck! Which suburb of Dallas? If you are north I know of quite a few facilities you can try.

@msg88 Thank you I will apply there.. it is tough. Good luck!!!

@Heatherisbetter thank you. I live in Carrollton Tx.

I'm not as savvy in Carrollton but I can talk to a few nurse I know... Hopefully someone here speaks up to help as well.

@heatherisbetter Thank You very much. At this point I am willing to take anything I don't care if I have to drive an hour away.

I would apply to programs that have internships. That just means that they are willing to train you. I know in HCA they give you a 12-16 week trial and after the internship they usually offer to sign you on as staff. I have heard that Baylor's interns are already hired on as staff. But that's my advice! Usually internships are offered bi-annually. Good luck!

@btab3 thank you for your response. I did apply to plenty of internships but I havent been accepted to any of them. But definitively I will keep applying.
