Amy -- be sure to let us know about your session today!

Although I don't know anyone on here personally yet, I doubt the complaint about the student not knowing 'renal' was not really making fun of that student.

Some people you just know the personality, and personally see their dedication, or lack there of. Maybe saying they 'cheated through A&P' is going too far, and that's why I posted what I did in response.

As I posted before, I know I have forgotten so much from A&P 1 since Spring '05, and almost a year since A&P 2. I sure don't want anyone thinking I cheated!

What Funnie said. I would never make fun of someone in that position. Going through Surg Tech program at EC, I know how tough the instructors can be. Pulling together was how my class got through.

Still we all had to do our share in order to make out effort successful. Brushing up on A&P or a 'refresher course' might not be a bad idea for pre-nursing students who feel they forgotten huge chunks of the material.

I posted my comment because during my first semester of school, I saw so much discord among the nurses at the hospital where I did my clinicals and I really wish we would all support one another rather than tearing others down.

I have seen seasoned nurses have the "brain fart" I referred to in my previous post. Specifically, a nurse that had been around for 16 years, informed me incorrectly what contralateral means. She said it meant side by side and it means opposite sides.

Not only that, I heard another RN ask what tachycardia meant.

Do you think they are incompetent because they had to ask or stated something incorrectly? I don't think so. They could have been tired or have had a long shift or maybe they just haven't heard the term in a long time. Honestly, you don't use the nursing school terms all the time in daily practice. I know nurses who can't spell very well as well as those who have a lot of trouble writing nurses notes because they have trouble wording things using medical jargon and maybe they are just not the best writers, but may be great nurses.

I don't know, I just wish people would not be so critical. I remember in pre-lab, I forgot what DKA was. I felt really dumb because I thought I should have known that, I was so stressed out from trying to finish my care plan.

Really, why do people miss individual questions on a test? It's because NO ONE knows everyting. If they did, then you should have people making 100's on tests. The reality is that you are going to forget things. That's what reference books are for.

I got the best advice in the world from my clinical instructor. She said that the day a nurse decides she knows everything is the day they become unsafe. A really good nurse may not know all the answers, but they will know who to ask and where to look it up.

You will never know everything and to label those that forget a term disgusting is a bit harsh.

I love nursing and I wish that we could hold each other up and be supportive rather than tearing each other down. But one won't really ever see that need until they get into real nursing practice.

I also want to point out, you never know how long it's been since someone took a class. such as A&P. Maybe the term "renal" was one they kept getting confused for hepatic or something. I have had a lot of words I had to struggle to keep straight. By the time you graduate nursing school you should have them straight, but in the meantime any time you are not positive that's what dictionaries are for and eventully things will start sticking.

The important thing is to know what you ''know'' for sure from what you need to double check on.

when I returned for second semester after starting with the normal 50, we had EXACTLY 29 LEFT!

We have lost many classmates after first semester, too. I don't know the exact number but half of my clinical group is gone. :o I wonder how 'big' a clinical group will be next semester.

Those two posts made me sad, sick and scared. I mean I know people have issues and illness come up and force them to have to leave a program or even not do well... and yes, some are lazy or just underestimate the program.

I know you can't force other people to work hard and they shouldn't be spoon fed as this is a program for adults.

Still it saddens me that a nursing school class has a half-life of one semester! What about all those that failed out and spent so much time, money and effort on pre-req's? what about those students that DID not get in (becasue of a 3.77 or one B) that would have been better prepared?

IMO, it's sad.

....Or even C students that may have made a better nurse than any of us... A grade is a grade.....the real world is totally different.

I'm scared and sickened about the thought of not making it as well, sunnyjohn.

...And God help me to never feel so embarrassed or inferior that I don't ask a question that I should know...The consequence of not asking could be fatal.

Wow, I didn't even know what was going on in here. I went on a weekend trip and I come back and I apparently teed a lot of people off.

I am so sorry for my comments.

I meant to add that I personally saw this person cheat through A&P. I went to the head of the department about it and everything but they just ignored me. It made me sick to see this person there on the first day when I know people out there who got denied is what my point was. I guess I should have been more clear about that and I apologize. I saw 3 other people that I knew who cheated through A&P II at least. It goes along with what everyone else was saying about someone getting in who only has 4 As but the rest Cs. I'm sorry that it wasn't as relevant as it was in my mind.

I went to Half Price Books this afternoon. I picked up the latest edition of Mosby's 'Nursing Care Plans' book for $14.98. I was pretty sure this was the same book that I had on my Amazon.com wish list and it was! The book is in like new condition and is listed at Amazon.com for $47.95. It still has the price sticker on the back that says $44.95. Lucky me...the store got it in sometime this month and I know it wasn't there 2 weeks ago when I went.

That's awesome!!! You will LOVE that book!

Funnie- you will be so great at this program! This was meant for you. I have a friend approaching 4th semester and hasn't repeated one yet! She's maintained all As and Bs. You two remind me a lot of each other. Having the passion that you do is half the battle. You will be awesome!

face -- I'm glad you posted. I thought I understood where you were coming from with knowing that someone cheated and being frustrated by that, but then with the other responses, I was wondering if I misunderstood :)

I think it is pretty clear from these ECC/NLC threads that the nurses (to be!) around here are very supportive of one another, willing to ask questions and look for answers. I'm not sure if I will ever meet any of them in person, but I'm not even in school yet and they have helped me out!

I am always here if you need my help. :D

I am a very understanding person but when I see cheating it just goes right through me. Especially when we're dealing with human lives.
