Brookhaven Nursing Program - Spring 2012 Admission

Hi! I am applying to the Brookhaven nursing program for fall 2011 admission. In my info session (and also on one of the threads on here) someone said the lowest point total to be accepted for spring 2011 was 31.7. I took my HESI yesterday and made a 95.2. I was disappointed with my 80 on the anatomy portion which really brought down my average. My point total is 33.4 which I think is competitive and I'm hoping it is enough!

Did ya'll only use the Evolve Review book to study for the HESI A2 or other resources ?

I also used my a&p textbook. The evolve book was ok but it doesnt cover everything.... The hesi tips kinda helped

For the anatomy section, I used the evolve study guide and google HESI A2 and found some flash cards by googling "hesi a2 flash cards" that came directly from the evolve study guide. Also I used website http://caring4you.net/HESIStudyRecommedations.pdf which pretty much expands on each thing in the evolve study guide, and looked up each of the things it says to know in my anatomy book. I still wasn't happy with my score though in the anatomy section (an 80), there were just some things that weren't talked about in any of those resources that were on the test. I saw somewhere that people had found one of the study guides you can buy on amazon or other book store sites helpful, but I forget the name unfortunately. They said the questions were much harder than those in the evolve book, but you ended up being even more prepared than necessary, so maybe buying an additional study guide might help.

For all the other sections I used only the evolve book and scored highly (only missed two questions total in all four other sections). The only thing was the evolve book doesn't seem to stress enough in the math chapter (though it does have them in the practice test) is the need to know all standard to metric conversions.

Hi Ashlee067, wow, 95.2 is excellent, I don't think you have anything to worry about as far as getting accepted with 33.4 points. I'll have 32, and I am fine with this. One of my instructors for Brookhaven was telling us that as long as we have 30 or more points our chances of getting accepted are good. Do you know how many students they will be accepting?

To mgorvie, I used the HESI study guide along with my A&P textbook for that section. I found the HESI hint boxes to be very helpful, it tells you what you really need to focus on, so I kind of used this as a guide for preparation. The HESI is really a matter of overall basic knowledge, either you know it or you don't. If you are weak in your math, there's a book I recommend using along with the HESI math section for extra pratice.

Thanks! I sure hope it is enough, this is my third semester trying to get into a nursing program (first time at Brookhaven, the other two were at UTA), so I reallyyyy don't want to have to wait another semester! I read on another post that they are accepting 60 for the fall.

I'm applying for Spring 2012 as well. I took the Hesi this Feb for practice and made an 87.5. Doing poorest in the anatomy section. I know I need to make at least a 92 or higher to be competitive. I need to focus on my grammar and anatomy to get my score up. I'm taking Micro, Art, and Dev Psyc right now.

as someone who applied three times and am currently in the first semester, i advise that you have a minimum of a 32. 31.something will be bottom of the barrel. many of your scores will be within hundredths of points from each other, and the bottom line was around 31.75 last time. last year they decided to take 60 in the fall and 40 in the spring- but they may be making it an even 50/50. they want to get more applicants in, but simply don't have the faculty or time. the program is intense as it is! the key to getting in is having a high hesi score, and completion of all but one or two support courses. if you score around 95 on the hesi, you might be able to get away with not having 2 courses. also, if you took the hesi and plan to retake it, login to https://evolve.elsevier.com/ and check your scores. you can create a study packet based on the info you missed- i didn't buy the study book, since the same info was online. this way you are only studying the stuff you need to refresh on- like getting an 80 on the a&p section! i retook my hesi after studying what i originally missed, and made 6 points higher!

look for may term/ summer/ flex term and online classes to enroll in- many are easy to take in a short time (like end of life, dosage, and even patho which can be found online). some people even take courses at other schools outside dcccd and transfer them in. here are the registration dates: when you are ready to register, be ready early! most spots fill up with priority registrants, but some come available later on, so keep the class saved in your schedule in econnect and check for open seats often. they say registration opens at 8am for priority, but it's a fact that people were able to register between 7:30-8am. if you have to go to advising to register, get there at least an hour and a half early!
