Hi,

I will be starting a travel position in texas in February (dialysis). Have my choice of several areas, but I am not familiar with Texas at all. I love the ocean. I love the idea of the river walk in San Antonio, and I like the performing arts. Can anyone give me info on cities/towns so I can make a somewhat informed choice? I am also a single female if that matters.

I've lived in Houston and San Antonio. I can tell you that San Antonio is nice and the medical center is decently safe. The river walk is nice and there is plenty of performing arts in San Antonio. San Antonio is also an hour from Austin and it is really nice there (great for some short trips if you like- lots of outdoor stuff, live music, and good night life). San Antonio is also about 2-3 hours from Corpus Christi (which is a much better beach then Galveston). It's also 3 hours from Mexico if you felt inclined to go visit.

Houston has it's pluses too. The Medical Center is the best in the world which is nice but there is tons of traffic. There is a lot to offer in terms of performing arts (I'd say better than what San Antonio has to offer) and Galveston is not far away if you wanted a beach.

So, I guess if I had to choose, I'd pick San Antonio. It is more centrally located and safe for a single girl (if you live in the right area).

Lots of culture in Houston.. I work in the med center and traffic is no problem (but I live REALLY close). Galveston is NOT where you want to go for a beach.

I like both San Antonio and Houston---two totally different cities. Houston traffic can be pretty nasty, but like pp said, they have world renowned medical care. San Antonio's riverwalk is nice and the city is smaller and the Mexican food is better IMO (Mexican food is important to us Texans!) Houston probably has more to offer in the way of performing arts, although the culture of San Antonio is not to be ignored! I also agree that a nice point about San Antonio is that it's close to Austin---an awesome city. If you like music---Austin is IT.

I would caution you that the beaches in Texas are nothing like east or west coast beaches (just saying this so you don't get your hopes up).

I have lived in Texas for 30 years and I would choose San Antonio!!!

I lived in Houston for most of my life. The advantage you have there is the Texas Medical Center and you should try to get a travel assignment at one of those hospitals. What is your area of interest and I can give you some feedback. I spent many years working at the hospitals there. Great places to eat and lots of fun things to do.

San Antonio is a great place. Hot dry climate. Houston is VERY humid in the summer. Austin is also a real nice place with some excellent hospitals. Great night life.

You will find that overall Texas is a very friendly place and the atmosphere there is like no place else. It is a culture unto itself. I don't live there now but it will always be my home.

Thanks for your input. It was very helpful. I will be working at a Fresenius dialysis center and they are throughout Texas, so the choice of areas is fairly big

hehe only someone who lives in Houston would refer to San Antonio as dry. ;) As far as humidity in San Antonio you're looking at ~80% in the mornings and 50-60% in the heat of the day. Corpus is a little more humid than San Antonio and then Houston more so than Corpus and San Antonio.

LOL--I guess it's all relative, but I think SA is very humid (I know that Houston is worse)--compared to us up here in North Texas. I wouldn't call SA hot and dry, but then again, I lived in Phoenix for 2 years! :bugeyes:

Yeah, I never considered san antonio "dry", but I grew up in El Paso...THAT is Dry!
