Looking at TN (in low violent crime  area - rural or suburban near city) to move, work, and play (outside hike, swim, fish, camp - no golf though). We have (physically)grown adult kids. I have 22 years nursing including hospice and palliative care, Home Health, Acute (Medical) Rehab, and Neuro Surg experience. Maybe retire in 10-15 yrs in same area - or maybe a Walmart greeter someday . Any recommendations of areas to stay away from, to check out, and any other input is really appreciated. Pay is no big deal if compared to area cost-of-living.

Thanks to you all-TR in Maine

Tennessee has four major cities, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Nashville, and Memphis. I would recommend the Knoxville or Chattanooga areas based on your interests. Memphis is one of the most dangerous cities in the country.

Be prepared for a culture shock. Nashville has several hospitals, but like most urban areas it can be expensive, salaries are low. I live in Ky and work in Clarksville, TN. Hospital is new, staff is both local and national due to the army base.

Take your time and check out the different areas BEFORE moving. Good luck

You work at a hospital in Clarksville? I am considering moving to Clarksville from Georgia and was wondering how Gateway is? Do you like working there? How is there ER and ICU? Do you know if they are hiring new grads? I graduate in December. Do you think it is worth the commute to drive to Nashville and work at or somewhere like that? Anyway, just let me know.

Thanks!

Thanks, my nursing colligue. Even though "Danger is my business," I value your feedback, and will heed your recommendation. Violence seems to be everywhere - so do nurses who just want to do his or her job - despite those who will benefit from our care!

Very many thanks for your feedback and advice. I, pretty much, don't respond to cultural shock any more. As a "mature" nurse, I've been around that block (too many times). I graduated in NC w/ADN in 1995 after living in big metro areas previously. Definately don't want to be unsafe in our "midlife years" (lets see, that makes me 104 when I "die"). Definitely will take your word and research the area. Looking at Crossville. Any feedback?

clarksville is a decent town, alots of military. Gateway is a new hospital and yes they hire new grads. I work both the Ed and ICU here at Gateway. Consider Med/Surg before going to the ED and or ICU. Getting your feet wet will help in the long run.

Vandy/Nashville is about 40 miles from Clarksville. Good luck

Gateway Medical Center in Clarksville is new and very nice. It is right off the interstate (I-24 exit 4). I have only been in it once so I don't really know much more about it. There is an army base (Fort Campbell, KY) close by so there are a lot of military in the area. There are certain areas of Clarksville that I wouldn't be in at night. A local real estate agent could probably tell you more about safety in the area. You should look off exit 11 in the Sango area of Clarksville. It is nice. Clarksville is big enough to have a mall and a lot of restruants, but smaller than Nashville.

There will also be many more job opportunities in Nashville. The main hospitals are Vanderbuilt Medical Center, St Thomas Hospital, Baptist Hospital, Centennial Medical Center, and Skyline Medical Center. I like all 5 of them. St Thomas is probably the smallest of the 5 (I think, I could be wrong). I did clinicals at Skyline and I loved it there. The building is the newest of all of them and overlooks the city. So it gives you a nice view of the "skyline" of Nashville. It is probably also the shortest drive if you are comming from Clarksville, but I'm not sure about the pay. I also love it because you don't have to get into much Nashville traffic if you are going there from the Clarksville direction. If you are interested in Psych, they have another location called Skyline Madison that is strictly a psych hospital. I also did clinicals there. I know that if I had the choice I would work somewhere in Nashville over Clarksville any day. It's just a personal preference. I know many people who live in Clarksville and commute to Nashville 5 days a week.

If you don't mind living about 20 minutes from Clarksville and you want a small town then you should check out Pleasant View or Springfield off exit 24 of I-24. It is about half way between Clarksville and Nashville. It is very pretty. Springfield is about 10 minutes off the exit and it has a hospital. I don't know much about it but I think it is fairly new. It is called Northcrest Medical Center. There is no hospital in Pleasant View, but it is right off the exit.

I can't remember if I have answered all your questions or not, but I'v gone on long enough, lol! I have lived in this area all my life and I keep thinking of things to add :) Good Luck on everything!

Oh and sorry, I don't know much about Crossville!

I am also considering relocating from Raleigh, NC. Thinking about Nashville. Would love to live downtown, close to shops, music, art/culture scene. I have 16 years experience, mostly in float pool, so I have done it all. Also on the list are Denver, Austin, Charleston, and Maryland. Thanks!
