2 semesters down at TWU (Texas Wesleyan) CRNA program, ask away!

Nursing Students SRNA

Published

I used this site religiously when I was preparing for my CRNA school application process. Today I found myself distracted and not wanting to study.....so here I am posting on this forum in case anyone has questions about Texas Wesleyan CRNA program. Ask away but I can guess what a few questions will be right off the bat, so here is a little background info.

I am 27, Male, Married w/ 2 kids (5 & 1.5), worked in a very diverse level 2 trauma SICU in Texas, had 1 year of experience to the day when I interviewed at TWU and was accepted upon interview. CCRN finished after 8 months of RN ICU work (met the hours quickly w/ overtime). GRE score 1100 on the old test scoring method. Over all GPA 3.6-7ish. RN school GPA 4.0. Science GPA 2.8!!! yah and I was grilled in the interview over that one lol....I will expand on it if anyone cares to know. Grades so far at TWU's program is a 4.0....we will see after my pharm final on Thursday!

I am very busy with school but I will try to answer questions/check back as often as I can...

Sorry if you thought I was being offensive. I was only giving my perspective (opinion) that there is much better information out there than nursing vs. health science when looking for a school. Like I said, I don't believe any program is necessarily better than another. They all get you to the end goal of being a CRNA. No disrespect intended.

First - to the OP - thanks for taking the time to post during school. It is appreciated by many.

Second - there are always going to be disagreements about school situations, schools in general, etc.. Its okay to disagree and I (staff) appreciate the respect towards each other in this thread even though you disagree.

Third - the DUMB rule about the 15 posts prior to using the PM system is actually for your protection - spamming of posters PM inboxes is greatly reduced.

A little history about nurse anesthesia programs. Nurse anesthesia has been around for about 150 years, obviously in that time period the educational requirements for nurse anesthetists has greatly changed. Nurse anesthetists training used to be completely OJT. Nurse anesthesia training then switched to certification training programs that were often housed in the hospitals themselves. Since that time nurse anesthesia programs have went from OJT, to certification, Bachelors, Masters, and soon Doctorate requirement to become a CRNA. In all that time one thing has not changed is that nurse anesthesia programs have continued to develop inside and outside of nursing departments.

FYI: Two of the best nurse anesthesia schools by anyone's measure are the two military nurse anesthesia schools, and both are MSN/DNP granting institutes.

What would you say is the least challenging class through the program and the most challenging class you had to take? What made them the way they were? Was it the information to understand or just the load of information you had to learn in a small period of time?

Thanks for this post!

I would like to apply to TCU and Texas Wesleyan for 2016.

I've have a BA in History 2009, with a 3.1 overall. Then 4.0 in nursing prereqs, and 3.66 in BSN 2013. I will have almost 2 years of PICU experience when the applications are due and 3 years total when I start if I get accepted the first time. I'm taking the CCRN next month. I made a 158 verbal and 152 math and 4 on the writing for gre. I feel like I'm a qualified applicant but maybe I'm naive to the applicant pool??? One thing different about my academic background is I've already begun an FNP program. I started right away even though I wanted to go the crna route as a backup. I'm worried what this decision will look like to admissions committees. I have taken 4 courses(patho, pharm, theory, and research) and I have a 4.0 for my graduate course work. Thoughts on this angle?? I assume I'll be asked about it in my interview and feel like the truth about the NP profession being a backup is a good way to go. Thoughts about that and my overall competitiveness as an applicant?

GRE scores and GPA of 3.66 are competitive. Experience looks good. I wouldn't worry about the FNP thing. That shouldn't hurt your chances at all. If anything it shows you have drive to further your education. Good luck!! Go for it. I would definitely get your CCRN before applying though
