University of South Alabama FNP program

Nursing Students NP Students

Published

Hi there! I saw some posts (mostly negative) about USA's FNP program from a few years ago. I may be overly-optimistic in hoping they're improved the program, but I'd love to hear some current comments about this program as well. Thanks!

I am interested in the Adult Geriatrics NP program offered by USA. I am interested on hearing other people's experiences. I'm not sure if I will get in. I was a teacher in my previous career, and have about a year and a half experience in nursing. I work in med/surg and telemetry. I also have some corrections experience in a clinic type setting. Do you think the program is possible for someone to still work 2-3 12 hour shifts per week?

I too am interested in the AGNP-PC track at USA. I initally thought I would prusue the FNP track, however, per their admission requirements one must have a bit of expiernce in this area when submitting thier resume, as part of the application process. Though I have worked with children it's been very limited compared to with adults, so once more I have changed my focus of interest I think to the AGNP-PC track.

OK continuing with my previous post. I have contacted the school on several occasions, and I found the lady that speaks with potential students regarding the MSN program to be a liitle rushed and slightly RUDE. I hope this will not be the impression I get from the contact I make with any of the instructors, if I should get accepted to the program. Now for anyone who are currently enrolled in any of the tracks, particuarly the AGNP-PC track there at USA if you could please share with me your expierence with the on-line Post BSN to MSN Program I will very much appreciate it. Also can you please share with me the name of the Advanced pharmacology text book you are using? What is the ISBN ? I have completed the application process for another program who also requires the application to be submitted via CAS. I found the CAS application process to be gruling, so I woud HIGHLY RECOMMEND you start that process as soon as possible. Good luck to everyone considering going back for your masters I say follow your dream. and start on it sooner than later. Good luck!

I haven't started the process yet. I hope to work on it this week, and get everything in by the deadline. It looks like the deadline is the 1st week of February. Did you apply already? Are you looking at any other programs? I have a ADN and a B.S. in Education, so I am limited to the programs that I can apply to.

Have you checked out the posts on ? I too have been looking for a good online program and had narrowed it down to a few - USA, ULL, and . I recently applied to WGU and have already had a phone interview but waiting for my transcripts to be received. They are affordable and tuition is a flat rate per semester no matter how many courses you complete. The feedback from former and current students is very positive. There is also a lot of good press you can read from reputable sources (money magazine, nbc news, etc). Good Luck on your decision and your journey!!

Hello AndromedaRn:

can you PM me as I can't. I am applying for this program and need more information.

Yes, you can work and do the USA FNP program at least for the first couple of semesters. I worked full time and did fine. If you can be very organized, you can do it.

If you're looking at the FNP program at USA, the spring and fall semesters are 15-16 weeks and the summer semesters are 8 weeks. For the first year (patho, assessment, pharm) we had tests on Wednesdays I believe and were given a window of about 12 hours that day to login with our remote proctor and take exams. Most of the exams the first year were open-book/notes, but you couldn't browse the internet. The second year is when you start getting into the FNP classes and clinicals. The FNP program instructors are much more strict than some other program instructors. You have to login specifically at 10am CST on every 2-3 Mondays for exams. There are NO exceptions to this. You use the same remote proctor that you used in the first year but the tests are no longer open-book/notes. The exams are straightforward and typically only 30 questions, but this can be on 300-400 pages of reading and you either know it or you don't. They typically take me 15-20 minute to complete and we'll have approx 5 a semester with a cumulative final. During the first year you will typically have 1 didactic course and 1 writing course. During the second year, you will typically have 1 didactic course, 1 clinical course, and may also have a writing course. The clinical courses require weekly online discussions, lots of paperwork to begin clinicals, and SOAP note assignments. The papers thus far in the writing courses (I'm beginning my 6th semester) haven't been over 10 pages and there are typically 5-6 per week along with a few online discussion posts. I'm happy to answer any other questions if you have them!

Hi,

Thank you for the information - it was very helpful! Do you remember how many people were accepted with you? I am waiting to find out if I have been accepted to the FNP online program and feel like I have been waiting forever! :)

I am finally applying now for the July deadline. I'm a little nervous considering what everyone has said on some of the other message boards. How many hours per week would you say you spend studying during the first year before you start clinicals? How did you arrange your clinical site? What specific specialty did you choose?

Do the instructors have power points or video lectures at all or is it completely, "Read these chapters, good luck"?
