University of South Alabama FNP program

Nursing Students NP Students

Hi there! I saw some posts (mostly negative) about USA's FNP program from a few years ago. I may be overly-optimistic in hoping they're improved the program, but I'd love to hear some current comments about this program as well. Thanks!

I am in the PMHNP program currently at USA. You can message me for details. But there are no study guides for the tests. There are no PowerPoints or video lectures. It is very, very self-taught.

PeacockMaiden, I am new to allnurses and unable to private message you at this time. I was wondering if you could give me some information on USA PMHNP weekly instruction, discussion boards, tests, quizzes, and written papers that are part of the program. Are there more papers to write or tests in the first few semesters? I would like also so information on the on campus clinical site requirements. I live in Louisiana and wanted to get an understanding of how many times I would have to visit the campus during the entire program? I have applied to USA for the summer program of study but have not heard anything as of yet. They state we will receive a letter sometime in March/April. However, I was accepted to UAB for the PMHNP program. I will start this summer. If you prefer to email the information, let me know. Any information would be grateful. Thanks in advance.

I am hoping to make the Fall 2016 deadline for the Dual Role NP but will likely be Spring 2017. Would love to hear feedback from current students about their experiences and about how much paper writing is involved. The older post above mentions 5-6 papers a week at 7-10 pages...that seems like a lot?

It depends on the class. I'm in my second semester. Just wrapped up NU 608 and am currently taking NU 607. I think in 608 I had 4 major papers and 2-3 discussion boards. In 607, I have 3 major papers and 3 discussion boards. The papers are generally 6-8 pages except for the last monster in 607 which is 8-10. It's a lot of writing, but nothing that can't be managed.

I am interested in applying to the dual role FNP/ACNP program at USA. I have read many threads on this school and it seems as if they have improved throughout the years. I still see a lot of threads where people have been displeased and state to basically run from this school, which makes me nervous. I hope to be doing the 8 semester course work for the dual program starting in the summer or fall of 2017. I do well with online courses as I received my BSN online. Can any recent student give me insight on how the program is now operated? I'm interested to know if the teachers get back to you in a timely manner, if doing 6-8 credits a semester is doable while working full time and anything else that will help me make a more definite decision on this school. Thank you.

I'm applying for Fall 2017 in the dual program, too. Maybe we'll get to be classmates? :D

I've contacted the school and have spoken with the advisor for the dual program. She's been very responsive to my e-mails and sent me an invitation to the campus visit for grad students in October. I am actually thinking about going, just so I can meet some of the faculty. I, too, do very well with online learning, so I feel confident I could handle the coursework. Plus, they already have a site agreement with my hospital.

Hey I liked what you posted and will be taking the same classes at USA this spring can you give me any advice. Thank you very much

Hey everyone. I just wanted to get an update on the progress and your thoughts once you started with the program. Was it what you were expecting??

Thanks!

I am just a month into the first semester and so far I have no complaints. A lot of studying and writing but has been manageable so far working full time. No issues with the way the school is doing things either.

Can I ask you what your demographic when you applied?? GPA, experience, etc.

49 y/o male. 3.9 GPA, 20+ years nursing experience in ICU, ER, and flight nursing. I am in the dual role tract.

Wow very qualified for sure! Are the classes presented as a lecture, powerpoint, or discussions formats??
