NP residency/fellowship

I am a FNP student and set to graduate this December, I am looking into NP residency/fellowships. Has anyone here had any experience with them or would be willing to share information about such programs. I think that they would be very beneficial for those coming out as new grad NPs.

A nurse who works with us in the ICU recently graduated and received certification as an ANP and is now a resident at Nurse Practitioner Residency - Introduction | UCSF School of Nursing.

This person likes the program and states there is so much to learn. Two residents are accepted each year so it can be competitive (ANP or FNP). The salary is not great but the one year spent as a resident can make a difference in finding that first job that requires actual clinical experience as a provider. It is a busy practice with a challenging patient population so the experience is certainly valued.

Juan, where can I find the salary information the the residency program you mentioned?

Not to be critical, it looks like the residents have to provide their own . I've never heard of a residency that requires the student to provide malpractice insurance.

I noticed the requirement. Glide Healthcare Services (the main site of the residency) is a FQHC and HCH site but the residency is sponsored through the School of Nursing at UCSF. There are rotations outside of Glide it seems like. The funding for resident salaries must be coming from UCSF which likely has no allocation for malpractice insurance (NP students in most if not all programs must have their own malpractice insurance). Not sure if this is the actual set-up but I didn't ask this person I know about the details. You could probably find out what the salary is if you call the program itself.

Thats your choice. You are also presumably being compensated enough to afford it. I have a fair amount of experience with post graduate programs and this is definitely out of the ordinary.

these would be cool to do. especially for those who want to do critical care. i would say it would be hard to get a solid critical care job without one of these residencies unless you where an acute care np. i spend 1/4 of my time in the icu as an fnp, but i don't do lines or anything since i don't have the training. with full subspecialty backup of course.

They need to offer more of these residencies for ER and icu.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, I agree there needs to be more of these programs set in place. After looking in to the different programs across the country and the ones I would be able to get in to, there aren't very many. They must be pretty competitive.

*Update, I have an interview Monday for Carilion Clinic Emergency medicine PA/NP fellowship. I have also applied for Carolina's healthcare Urgent Care fellowship in Charlotte, NC. I have not heard anything yet from that one.
