Hello, I am currently a pre-nursing student and one day hope to become a PNP. I was wondering can PNPs work in the neonatal unit, and if so what level can they work in. Also what's there daily duties in the neonatal unit if they can?

There is another type of NP program specifically for neonatal (NNP). I've never seen anyone other than an NNP work in a nursery of any type.

Age 2-16 = PNP (primary care) or ACPNP (acute care)

Um...not quite

PNP is birth through 21 (though upper age could vary slightly based on state) but definitely can see newborns and over 16!!!

we have NNPs (neonatal NPs) who work exclusively in the NICU only, but don't see any other patients outside of the bedside.

in my area it is a very specialized role and they don't do PEDS, just the NICU babies. most seem really good at it though!

They aren't trained for peds. They are trained to care for neonates.

If you want to work in the NICU you want to look at becoming a Neonatal NP (NNP). If you want to work with children you want to consider a Pediatric NP (PNP) and know that there is an acute and a primary care speciality. The acute is more focused on hospital based versus primary is out of the hospital. Primary Care PNP can still work in specialty units...though some hospitals aren't allowing it. The #1 children's hospital in the country was threatening to make all their PNPs in speciality units get their acute but I have been told they backed down from that.

You have lots of time to figure out what you want to do and as you progress in your studies you will begin to figure out what you want. If you want NNP you need to do everything you can to be a stellar student so you have try and get into a NICU. It is hard to get into a NNP program without NICU experience.

And how is the conclusion drawn that they are #1?

This year they are tied for #1. Last year they were #1. CHOP (Philadelphia)

Over 16 can be seen by ACNP/ANP so that is probably why they are drawing the age line there.
