Visits per Day

it all depends on the day. when i was a school nurse (small school 4 programs , 100 students total.. would often have between 30 and 40 visits in a day ( includes scheduled meds) . I also saw staff with medical issues.

That's way too many for a school of that size. If it's active flu season...maybe, but not this early in the year.

Unfortunately you have to train your teachers to know..who, when, and why you send a kid to the clinic. Somtimes it is outright abuse of the clinic.

Get tough and let them know you won't tollerate it. We have so much more to do besides taking care of the sick and injured.

I think it depends on the grade-levels you are seeing, too. In my high-school of about 500, I see about 10 or so a day, but the elementary school nurse with about the same number of students probably sees closer to 40 a day.

Oh, I know we are being abused. This place has little in the way of any procedures or policies...but that is being worked on at the moment and I'm sure the abuse will soon slow down!

I have a high school of about 1600 students. I see between 30 and 40 students a day. I complained once to my mother that if I see one more student walk through my door I was going to scream. She reminded me that that's what I was hired to do. I have learned to not have a concrete agenda for the day because that's when the revolving door occurs. Some days are very light so that's when I get paper work done. I also have a plan period, just like the teachers, to get caught up on things without student interuption. After 16 years of school nursing, I have learned how to balance the student care with the never ending paper work.

At the beginning of the year, I mail out a flyer stating my background and the set up of the clinic. I let them know all of our school systems rules upfront. New young teachers don't always realize what you can and cannot do. I discourage visits for mild complaints during lunch hour because of multiple diabetic visits. Of course they can come for anything obvious. I've had to talk with the lunch room ladies because the kids would say I have a headache and they would go ahead and send them automaticaly without discussing with teacher. I would end up with 8 kids at once. If the same kids keep coming to see you, they either need to be diagnosed with a problem or you need to talk with teacher and mom. Sometimes the TLC you give them makes them want to return but it's like crying wolf. They need to come when they really feel ill. I know we're there for boo boos and for being a mommy sometimes, but I can get hairy when there too many kids at once and your dealing with asthma, diabetes etc... Teachers need to help you out in this regard, you just have to educate them. If Jonny c/o a headache or stomach ache did they try bathroom did he eat, etc..Is he distractable? I'm rambling! sorry hope this helps

12-40 per day. They get sent to me for everything (lost button on shirt, enuresis, bloody nose, not sitting still in class, fevers, everything)

When I sub at the elementary school of 1100 students, I see around 50 students a day not counting meds. This school has an assistant also. At the high school of 2300 students, I saw around 25 students and 5 staff members. At the middle school in peak cold/flu season (1800 students) I saw 100 students in one day all by myself. It was an unusual day, and it was also a Monday.

Personally I think the age level has alot to do with "needy" frequent flyers. Middle school is definitely the toughest age group I've worked with so far.

most I have seen in one day was 4, guess I would rather be busy with more but not 100 of them, you'd be crazy by the end of the day!:sofahider

I am the school nurse for 650 students from preschool - 8th grade. I usually see between 30-40/day, but now that it is flu season its been between 50 and 60. Keeps me busy!
