Hello all,

I am a LVN, the only on staff nurse M-F 8am to 4. I was asked before I got hired to give Tb shots to staff. Thats totally fine with me. But heres the new twist. HR lady has asked me to start giving shots to the community up here where I work is small mountain community. She wants to charge them $20 for the shot, and have me give them out of my work office during school hours. I've already had to put them in check about what my LVN license covers and does not. I feel like this is a independent contractor or something type situation. Any ideas?

HR lady has no authority by which to set up and essentially run clinic out of the school. Is she a physician and capable of taking on the responsibility of being the medical director? Is she capable of expanding practice from the school to the community? Someone needs to put her in her place on more than just your function as an LVN.

Don't do it! That is a liability on you, most importantly, and also the school district. What if someone has an anaphylactic reaction and you're then dealing with that along with a room full of sick kids. No way! Talk to your boss and go up the chain if needed.

i would think that you would need a higher medical authority in the office than an LVN to start giving to the community. It was dicussed in my school about doing them and i said it was fine - i could do them, (after the school md signs off that we can place them in new hires as needed) but that we would also need to buy the supplies and once i brought up that a bottle of Aplisol was over $70 and had to be discarded in 30 days once opened the subject was dropped.

No way! Need MD orders, emergency supplies with standing orders, legal consent drawn up.Plus, people coming in your school clinic off the street is a safety issue. Not to mention privacy for students and adults coming in. Give me a break. Protect your license!!

I guess there is another day school around here, that she wanted me to give people shots to. Its only 3 people, so I just went ahead and did the 3 people. I'm having such a hard time with trying to make people understand im an LVN, and I can only legally do so much. They act like cause I was hired I can do everything. I have a contract RN but shes just for IEP'S and screenings. I feel like the middle child here, with the Admin looking at me for everything, but Me knowing my license cannot cover a whole lot, and the RN is just backup?

Don't you need a prescription to order tuberculin testing solution? And syringes? Epi pen in the event of an anaphylactic reaction? Are you doing one step or two step (recommended)?
