So, in the school setting, are you double checking insulin?

Just randomness that crossed my mind.

Also, how do you deal with situations where staff/teachers/administrators want to make the nurse's office the place for students to de-escalate/calm down so they aren't a danger to themselves and/or to others?

Remember how I said today was crazy?

Let me hear from you guys please!

Thank you! ?

Loved all of your responses.

I definitely do what most of you do, regarding checking insulin pens before the kiddos self administer and monitor everything they enter into their pumps.

I am at a H.S., so all of my diabetic kiddos, with the exception of one, are very non-compliant.

Thanks for your input regarding this.

As for the other part, I whole-heartedly agree with you all. I feel it is not the appropriate place. I don't have that training as a few of you mentioned. I am the only staff member in my health office, as this health office does not have two RN's nor an aide.

I do get very busy, as most of you all do.

I thought maybe I was wrong for thinking that it wasn't the appropriate place, but your replies helped make me feel otherwise. You all are amazing. Can't say it enough!

I work in a high school. I have 4 diabetic students this year (this is down from my high of 12 diabetic students when I first started here). One student is special needs. He just started giving his own insulin at the beginning of this school year. He primes, dials up the correct dose on his pen and I double check it before he self administers. I used to have him double check me when I used to give him his insulin. The rest of my kiddos are independent. They check in with me, but I don't do anything hands on with them at all.

Some kids do come to my office to "chill" for a bit, but I have never had a truly agitated student get sent to my office. We have resource rooms for those students and I think they deescalate in there.

My kiddos have insulin pens, I listen for the "clicks" if that makes sense. I want them to know I trust them, and I am allowing them independence. I also make sure they say back to me how much insulin they are getting.

There are kids that I would absolutely not trust as far as I could throw them, but thankfully my T1D's here aren't one of them.

Usually they bring me the kids and I just let them sit there quietly and then ask them what's wrong. 9/10 they tell me and we chat a bit, then the admin takes them away.

For the LS kids, they have their own room to calm down.
