Hello fellow school nurses. The parents at my school has the Principal and Vice Principal on pins and needles and scared senseless. It's like any student that comes in my office to see me about anything, the Principal and Vice Principal is always at my door panicking. I mean it's ok to check on students but they do toooooo much:sarcastic:. I can be in the process of asking students question (doing my assessment) or just about to call mom or dad when the Principal and Vice Principal pops out of nowhere. Does anyone else Principals react like this. I just want to do my job:down:

Inquiring minds want to know!!! I am intrigued on this one......

From what I have been told, she was administering flu shots at the same time as when her diabetic comes in and she had predrawn that dose and grabbed the wrong syringe.

Oh. My.

Oh. My.

My words exactly. Why on earth would you pre-draw insulin and then put it right next to pre-drawn flu syringes...?

Why on earth pre-drawing any of the above? Insulin should be based on CBG and flu vaccine shouldn't be predrawn at all.

Meet with them and go over what you do when a student comes in, the nursing process etc. Also, how you handle different situations. I think they just don't want to be surprised and be caught off guard if a parent calls them, especially if they are upset about something. I tell mine that no news is good news and that I will absolutely find them if something is going on. Otherwise, I try to leave them alone.

That's totally what I meant... ;) And why are you pre-drawing insulin prior to checking a student's BG?

Agreed.

But like I said back in my first response, that incident has made my principal and parents a little more sensitive about anything coming from my office. But it's getting better day by day because I probably over communicate with my staff and the parents.

My best guess to this is that the student checked BG and estimated carbs but they wait until after lunch to see how many carbs were actually eaten. Still poor practice to draw up before hand but I'm speculating.
