Hi Praiser and others!! We start Thursday and the kids back Monday. I've been in and out of the office the past couple weeks trying to get things organized. I'm excited for the start just like come May, I'm excited for the end!

Today was faculty/staff day, kids start tomorrow. My first real day as a school nurse. Can't wait! Hope everyone has a great year!

Kids came back Monday. Just trying to get the opening stuff caught up. No matter how much I prepare before the first day, it always looks like a disaster by now. Just the paper is getting me.

Hello out there! I am just trying to keep up with all that is expected of me.:banghead: Sometimes I wonder if all this paper work is necessary...really...It would be a lot less stressful.

Well, I have decided I need a mental health break in my day after running ragged for the last 4 days, so here I am!

I have a new diabetic this year, and of course no paperwork for her when she started. She is new to town and does not see the new endo doc until next month, and her pedi did not feel comfortable writing orders, so her parents finally went back to the old endo in another state for orders. They told her that the PARENT had to fill out the order form and the DOCTOR would ONLY sign it! Whaaaat???? Since when do parents WRITE ORDERS for their diabetic kids? So, I explained the form to the mom and she filled it out with what she is doing at home for the kiddo, then we faxed it to the MD and he signed it. I am FURIOUS about this and seriously considering a complaint to the board. So, that fiasco took up my first few days at work.

I also have a PK with an epi pen and, again, no orders. Mom claims I never gave her the form in the spring and the whole office saw me do it, but anyway I told her I could not administer anything without orders. She said "so when my kid gets stung by a bee like the other 4 kids (which is true), you are going to let him die?" I told her I was sorry but I did not make the rules, the State of Texas did and I cannot administer anything without doctor's orders or risk my license. She then said "oh they won't take your license, I am a nurse too. Please!" So, I remain calm, wondering to myself what kind of nurse this person is (who bets she is a receptionist at a doctor's office? Any takers?) and counting to ten over and over. She finally got the picture and is supposedly getting the form. I even called her doc to see if I could just fax it but they have to see her in person because they charge for the form (which I think is ridiculous!!!!)

On top of those fun things I have a bazillion new PK kids to enter shots on, new immunization requirements and NO ONE got them done over the summer despite my pleas, a brand new order to straight cath a special ed 3rd grader q 4 hours (this is one thing that is going surprisingly well, we thought she would fight it but she has been an angel), and all the other routine start of the year stuff. I have also been elected to head up a wellness committee, which is great, but the district is requiring a bunch of paperwork that could be done away with.

Sooo, that's how my year is going!!! On the bright side, I moved over the summer to a cute farmhouse on some land. The commute is a killer (80 miles round trip), but it is worth it to watch the deer graze over coffee in the morning.

Hope everyone has a great year!
