New Graduate starting a School Nurse Positon

Specialties School

Published

I am a new Graduate, and I am about to start my new job as a school nurse, I am freaking out, does anyone have any advice or helpful tips...

Specializes in Pediatrics Retired.

When are you starting?

The best advice I can give...Don't over-think things and use common sense.

The hardest part for me when I started was determining what illnesses were legit, and which were total fakers. You will learn this quickly.

You may be "tested" at first until you earn the trust of both the students and the staff.

But anyway COMMON SENSE prevails in most situations.

Also, I used a log sheet that lists name, teacher, ailment, time in/time out. When you get busy, this helps to remember what student was there when and for what problem.

For me, the first few days were nutty. I had no orientation to the job, nor the computer system, etc. But it gets better as time goes on.

Thank you so much, I will let you know how it goes!

It looks like you're practicing in Texas..PM me and I'll give you my contact information; Texas requirements, etc...... If you don't have a resource in your district.

I'm a new RN as well from Texas. I have a interview for a school nurse position this week and I'm anxious but excited! Any advice on how to prepare for the interview???
