Making a nurse visit positive

Specialties School

Do any of you school nurses out there current or past do anything special for your kids that come in? By this I mean: stickers, lost tooth holders, etc. do you have books in your office or anything of that nature? Obviously you don't want to make it too comfortable in your office or all the kids will come knocking!

any ideas are appreciated!

No stickers (except for health screenings) - the kiddos are "sticker junkies" and will eat you alive for stickers!

Sorry his post before done.... I do put lost teeth in tooth fairy boxes. I also keep a stack of books and Lego magazines for kiddos to read while lying down or when having a nebulizer tx. If a parent is taking forever to pick their kiddo up, I will see if kiddo has schoolwork in backpack or a book and if no homework, I give crayons and paper and have them draw me a pic to put up on one of my bulletin boards that I reserve for student drawings.

In my view, I would rather be known as a "nice school nurse" and have to shoo away some of the kiddos who fake it just to come see me!

No stickers but I do keep books, paper and drawing supplies for the wait times on parents. I also keep a stash of peppermints, amazing how peppermints and speed up the healing on a scraped knee! LOL!

I also give the students plastic tooth necklaces for lost teeth. I have learned not to give out things as my office is flooded with "visitors" and "talkers" constantly. I enjoy them, but my office gets so crowded that I have to shoo them away. I swear they have a secret announcement system as when I give 1 kid something - I get 20 kids asking for the same thing and then 20 more and 20 more....! I have never had a student who is nervous about coming to see me - even when I took care of PK - 2. I wish I was not so popular. It is a problem..really it is because I don't like to shoo them away. I lay awake at night thinking how I can discourage them from coming to me...(they come for nothing really, just a walk and break from class).

So......I have to keep myself in check about what I give to the kids, or else whammo...a herd! And then I end up being crabby to them. Your students maybe different from my student population.
