Survived my first week
Stomaches and headaches galore. And it was only 1st and 2nd grade. These kids learn early huh? Im also learning that a lot of parents want to be called if their child gets a papercut. Prek and k start Tuesday and that brings my diabetic student and few special needs students I'll be working with. Sometimes im in feeling great and confident in my office and other times I am completely overwhelmed and feel like I know nothing. Please tell me this is a consensus! Happy Labor Day weekend!

Wrapping Injuries
Do any of you wrap injuries? I'm brand new and have had conflicting advice given! A past nurse says she wrapped kids all the time while another said never to wrap because if it merits a wrap then the child should be taken home and seen by a doctor. Thoughts?

The Week Before School Starts
I wasn't given any info on what I am supposed to do on Monday! I'm assuming I just show up when the regular school day starts! The "help me" has already begun!

The Week Before School Starts
What do you do the week before school begins? My first official day of school nursing will be the same day the teachers report. I am assuming I will be doing alot of inventory on what was left by the nurse before me, professional development with other staff?, a start on record keeping for the prek and k? What has been your experience in the past?

Do you keep snacks in your office?
General Snacks for the students? Maybe your diabetic kids? Do any of you keep them on hand to help a hungry child out? Curious to what everyone does!

Newbie here!
To answer the emergency question I simply used the nursing process as an example. I would plan ahead accordingly to the students who already have significant health concerns, chronic problems and need medication daily. Those children especially would need care plans and an emergency protocol right off the bat. So assessment is key at first, then coordinating with parents and other staff to agree on a protocol for each child. Then of course being prepared in that you have supplies on hand, always physically prepared for an emergency and that depending on state laws and school district policies that you can delegate certain tasks to other staff during an event. I hope that helps. The Interview was a blur to me afterward!

Every Bump and Bruise noted for parents?
I've been looking at editable forms online I could possibly use in my office this coming school year. I've seen a lot of clinic forms for parents...as if every child you see should get some kind of "record" they were there sent home to parents. This isn't realistic right??? I mean I can see sending home something even after speaking to the parent over the phone about it but every bump and bruise? Not sure on all the policies for this matter in my school strict but how about yours?

Making a nurse visit positive
Do any of you school nurses out there current or past do anything special for your kids that come in? By this I mean: stickers, lost tooth holders, etc. do you have books in your office or anything of that nature? Obviously you don't want to make it too comfortable in your office or all the kids will come knocking! any ideas are appreciated!

Newbie here!
At my interview I was questioned by not only the nursing supervisor of the school district but also the principals of the schools hiring. They asked me questions like How do you prepare and plan for emergencies? What does the role of a school nurse mean to you? What do you think is the most frustrating part of school nursing, etc. I basically stressed the fact that I always assess, implement and prioritize and are always prepared for the worst case scenario. Let me know how it goes! Good luck!
