Brand new school RN here! Actually, brand new RN. Earned my licensed a little less than a month ago and I start my new job next week. It is very part time in a small school district- only 15 hours per week. Because of the limited time, the job consists primarily of educating the unlicensed staff who will be giving meds, developing careplans for the kiddos with severe conditions, etc.

Will be interesting to see how it goes!!

Specializes in Peds, School Nurse, clinical instructor.

I hope you have another nurse in your district or surrounding districts to bounce things off of. Being a brand new nurse, I am sure you will have some questions. Best of luck and welcome to school nursing :)

Specializes in School Nursing.

Welcome! My district hires new RNs frequently and I had less than 6 months hospital experience before landing this job...it can be done! Find yourself a mentor if there is not already another nurse in your district. Check to see if your state has a school nurse consultant and send an email to introduce yourself. Learn what policies are already in place in your district (lice policies, exclusion policies, etc) and go from there. When you aren't sure, pop on over here and ask...we all bounce things off each other all the time! Good luck, if you're like me you'll love school nursing!

good luck! I am a new school nurse too-been at this job for 2 months now. So far there is so much I don't know (the school stuff, education laws, state requirements, etc not the nursing stuff) but I am finding that reaching out to other local school nurses and this site has been a HUGE help! Don't be afraid to ask questions. Things will come up that you're not sure how to handle but others will have done it before. So far I love it!
