Hello,

I'm curious if anyone else have had the urge to teach as a school nurse? We're surrounded by teachers, and sometimes I do think about it.

I have all the love and respect in the world for classroom teachers, but I do my job because I don't want theirs! I spent a week doing classroom teaching at grade levels K - 5 last year and I was ready to run screaming from the building at about day 1 1/2!

Since I work district-wide, many students don't know who I am. So I make a point to be visible, as much as possible, in the classroom. I teach "the talk" to all 5th grade girls, do a special presentation to all 6th graders during drug-free week, teach a state mandated shaken baby prevention class to all 7th and 10th grade students, and do a career day with our HS biomedical engineering class. I'd like to do something in the lower grades but haven't figured anything out. After doing any one of these "teaching" days, I'm always in awe of those who can do this all day every day. Besides, aren't we "teaching" in everything we do?

I teach handwashing and "germ class" to some younger grades. It helps the little kids to know who I am earlier and on a positive note.

Why can't you teach? There are tons of health issues that little ones (and bigger kids) can benefit from learning about. Go for it!

Specializes in Pediatrics.

I teach the Certified Nurses Assistance Lab at the high school level, in addition to teaching as often as I can in the school district. At the elementary school I teach hand washing, dental hygiene, tolerance of others with disabilities. Middle School I teach the puberty class, and then a sex-ed class to the older kids. At high school I teach about sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy prevention. The teachers like to have someone else come in the classroom occasionally and I love to teach.
