Oh, my. I had my first Doomsdayer today. My little diabetic guy came to me all in a dither this morning because he heard the world was going to end today 12/12/12. I didn't bother to tell him it's actually 12/21/12...his blood sugar was over 160, he was so upset! In the end, I told him the world isn't going to end any time soon. Let's just get through the Christmas break first...

Then I saw one of my little 1st graders, 2nd day in a row, c/o sore throat. He had fallen asleep in class and when he woke up he said he had a headache. So I asked him, like I always do "Why do you think you have a headache?" Answer: "I was having a bad dream. You know that dream, where the pizzas are flying around your head and the crust is all black? I don't ever want to see that kind of pizza again!" Is that the very description of a fever dream or what?! t100+, your ticket home, my friend...

uncompliant teenager with IDDM. ugh... does what he wants when he wants... parent and MD aware... bs in the 400 range...ugh....

That was me for most of my teen years... A1c was usually 14+ and neither my parents or doctor could make me be "good." After I finished college decided it was stupid to make myself feel terrible all the time. Now I'm 40 and have decent blood sugars and no complications.

So don't give up on your non-compliant teenager. It's pretty par for the course for IDDM teen. Also this link that does a good job explaining some of the teen's thinking.

Today they're yours, tomorrow they're mine. Young adults with DKA.

Gee, and I thought I was the only one!! Headaches, stomachaches, teeth aches, ear aches, everything aches, nausea/vomiting, bead in nose, swallowing the metal part of the eraser end of the pencil. Fevers, fevers, more fevers. Parents not updating their phone numbers causing umpteenth number of phone calls etc etc. Lots of bleeding parts....

And this has been since Dec 1

YIKES!!!

I think they all have substitute-itis as well. Had to go tell the kindergardeners the story of the boy who cried wolf last week :) I don't think they got it...

I think it's all the sugar getting to their heads!!
