I'm a new grad and I've just started my first full time school nurse job and while it has been a little crazy starting mid-stream, I love it. My supervisor (who is not medical personal, I work at a charter school) and I were discussing CPR training for new teachers and the students. Next fall I was be working with grades 7-12 and planning my own after school health programs with CPR training being a possibility for the students.

Has anyone here gotten certified as a CPR instructor and than lead a class for staff and/or students are your school? I know where in my area I can get instructor certification over the summer and the school is willing to pay for it, but not how to precede much after that...

Thanks!

THere will be a considerable investment in mannekins and AED trainers unless you can find an agency to loan them to you. Our local fire department comes in to teach CPR/AED for the cost of the instruction book and CPR card. $15 per participant. This is American Heart Assn.

Red cross has a separate program.

Excellent point, thank you. I am trying to generate a proposal on the cost of course materials vs. benefits for the school and will look into any agency that may be willing to loan or rent equipment.

Your local hospital may also have the resources to borrow from. In the long run, it may be worth the schools while to invest in the mannekins and in you as an instructor. Check with AHA and RedCross. Good Luck!

Our school district is rather large; therefore, all the nurses are receive Red Cross training and are certified to teach CPR to those employees required to get training.

i am certified to instruct cpr, i actually have made a nice little side business out of it. The mannekins are pricey, but are a one time type expense. You don't have to get the fancy resusci-annies, you can get by just fine with the "blue guys" as i call them. I still go back to my last district to instruct for them.
