"Emergencies" in the school

Just a funny story I had to share:

I was giving "the puberty talk" to a class of fifth graders yesterday when the classroom phone rang. It was the Secretary (who I love dearly, but has no healthcare background). In a panic, she says "I need you in the office, there's an emergency!"

I get a little worried because the teacher had stepped out, so I am the only one in a classroom with 17 fifth grade girls so I can't really just leave then alone.

"What's the emergency?!" I ask, expecting my peanut - allergic first grader to be in anaphylactic shock from eating something with nuts at their Valentine's party.

"I have a kindergartner here who had an accident and needs help cleaning up and changing!"

hahaha. Sigh of relief!

I was like "Ok well it's 3:15 (school ends at 3:30), just call her parents and see of they can pick her up a little early..."

Don't worry, we all made it through the rest of the day okay!

Aren't most of these people also parents? Jeez, just borrow some gloves and help the kid clean up. SMH.

THIS. I'm always sooo tempted to ask, "Would you be freaking out about xyz (nosebleed, stomachache, whatever "emergencies" their children experience at home all. the. time.) at home???"

Everything is an emergency in the school setting!!! I have been called to the gym for an "asthma attack" who was sitting calmly and chatting with the coach, called to the cafeteria for a nosebleed that hadalready stopped, called to the bathroom because someone feels nauseated, been called to the bathroom when a teacher was having diarrhea, the list goes on and on. One day, there will be a real emergency and I will be slow to respond because I will not believe it is for real.

I got a call from school one day and the secretary was like "your son had an accident" I am like is he ok, does he need emergency care?

It was like pulling teeth from a cat to get correct info from her. It would have been more helpful for her to say. "Your son needs a change of clothes, he didn't make it to the restroom in time" Geesh!

Glad it's not just me!!!! Called emergently to the bus for a student that "can't breathe." The problem? It was a cold day and the child said "it's hard to breathe." (She was fine.) Ridiculous! Where is the common sense???

And if one more student comes to see me with a nosebleed and NO tissue, my head is going to pop off. Once again, COMMON SENSE, PEOPLE!!!!

Yup, my front desk person thinks EVERYTHING is an emergency. in her life, she instantly does for her kids, grandkids anything and everything, and expects me to do the same for all 500+ kids here.

That headache the kid has had since 1st block and it is now 12:00, YES, I WILL CALL THE NURSE!!!!

Even though it may be the third time my lunch, such as it is, may be disrupted. Call me all day long for an emergency, seizure, bleeding, unconscious, dead, Yup I'll get there pretty darn quick. But please, please let me eat 1/2 of a sandwich.....puhleeze!!!!
