What do you think this means?

I attended cc a longggg time ago (18 yrs). I did mediocre at best.

(a "b" in both eng comp1 and psych 1 and a "c" in bio2 a stinking D in int algebra and an "a" in gym) giving me an gpa of 2.29.

In the nursing progam brochure it states:

Criteria for admission are as follows:

1. High school and college transcripts from all institutions attended

should be filed in admissions office prior to February 1 of the year

seeking admission (i.e. February 2007 for fall 2007 admission).

2. A grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 for current or previous

college students.

Point System

A point system will be applied for those applicants who meet the following

eligibility requirements:

a. Overall grade point average (GPA)

4.0-3.7 = 10 points 3.6-3.3 = 7 points

3.2-2.9 = 4 points 2.8-2.5 = 1 point

b. Prior degree: master’s = 3 points; bachelor’s = 2 points;

associate’s = 1 point.

c. 100% of course work taken at JCC = 2 points.

d. Prior to the semester that the application is being received, completion

of each required non-nursing course with a C or above = 1 point per

course

Ok, now for my question:

I will complete my fall semester and have a new gpa by the time the app has to be in, but what constitues overall GPA? Will it ONLY be my current studies and whatever classes they accept as a transfer credit? Or will my entire courseload bach then be factored in?Thanks for any input!

( I do have an advisory appointment in the morning and I guess I will know then but I am a very impatient person LOL!)

Usually they ( ns) want a copy of your transcripts to review all courses taken. This shows ALL of your classes that you have taken and gives a cumulative gpa. Since it was so long ago, some of those classes may not transfer. For example, my ns requires that the science courses be taken no less than five years ago.:uhoh3: So, your sciences may not count. That is definately a advisor question! Hope this helps.

So if they don't tranfer will they not count? In other words will the D in a math course that I'm not looking to tranfer anyway hold down my overall gpa and keep me out of np do you think?

My school looked at overall GPA and transfer GPA. They did not consider classes that weren't college level (as in some math courses), but did count all English and other pre-req's and they were able to count some of the other classes as non-nursing electives. Good luck!

Well, this is where everything gets tricky. It depends on the required courses for the programs, etc. For example, when I took inter. algebra, it was not a required course but it still was on my transcript. Some schools select only the required courses and add up the gpa and some don't. SO, it really depends on how they look at it. Also, they look at your overall science gpa. Some schools require that you have at least a 3.0 science gpa. It really gets confusing! I would go for it and do your best. Make sure that you are taking the right courses and not wasting time. Find out about that science class whether you need to repeat it or not since it has been so long ago. Make sure to find out major details about the requirements and such for the program that your applying to.!!!

All of the colleges I have looked into count everything you have taken as your GPA. If you retake something generally the new grade replaces the old, and the old isn't counted. You might want to consider retaking the Algebra to raise the grade.

If I were in your position, I would inquire about something that is often termed academic renewal. In some cases, schools will offer to line-out or disregard your old grades if they are more than 10+ years old. The grades will remain on the transcript, but they will not be factored into GPA calculations. These situations often arise (as in your case) when people choose to go back to school and focus on a different path, now doing very well grade-wise.

My local community college does this (although the process may be called something else at your previous school). In my case, I had to ask them to line-out an F I received for a class I forgot to drop 10 years ago, something I was just taking for fun or curiosity.

If you school does not offer this, I still think you have hope. So many students who are going back have less than stellar academic records and I know that many schools really don't put that much weight on grades you achieved almost two decades ago. They will obviously be more focused on the effort you are putting forth now, so I would highly recommend doing all that you can to prove that you are completely motivated to succeed.

Ok I went to the school yesterday and met with 2 different advisors. One was the one who decides if my credits will transfer. The 2 classes I needed to transfer were eng comp1 and psych 1. I had a b in both of those. He gave me the credit for both and so I do not have to retake them which is great. Now I only have to take one course (chemistry) that is not part of my degree.

I then met with the nursing department. She explained a few things about the point system to me but didn't get too far into it because she said they may be changing it.

So what I think I got from it is:

Yes my grades from then WILL count but only for a little while. After a semester or two here they wont even look at that anymore..especially since the D was in a course I am not transferring over.

She really stressed that there are many people that have mediocre grades from a long time ago and that they try not to weigh it too much as people do change a lot in that many years.

She said if I do really well this semester I will have enough points to be "competitive" for the fall '08 np start. ( I have to apply in Feb for Sept). So that is my goal for now.

One thing I am learning from this site is that ALL schools are different. I had thought that they were all pretty much alike, but then I come on here and hear of some doing completely different things than myself.

I would wait to see what your school says. B/c they are so old they may not transfer and may need to be retaken, but, they may still figure into your GPA. I know at my school, general courses are only good for 10 years and NE are good for three.
