Too many science prerequisite repeats??

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone has the same problem as me. I'm currently looking into applying to a bunch of different nursing programs (ADN and BSN at Junior Colleges and State Universities) throughout California, mostly in Los Angeles and OC areas. However, I keep coming across the same policy at most of these schools that makes me ineligible for almost every school but 3 community college ADN programs: the repeat policy.

Here's the problem. Most schools only allow students to have one repeat, with some more generous schools allowing 2 science repeats total. I, unfortunately, have had 3 repeats. 2 in Anatomy and 1 in Physiology. And because of this, I can't apply to most nursing programs and now am limited to only 3. However, I'm so scared that because I'm only applying to 3 different programs, I will not be able to have a career in nursing.

I guess I'm mostly wondering if I'm all alone in this problem.

And also, if anyone knows any schools in CA that doesn't have as strict of a repeat policy.

I've been really discouraged lately about nursing, but it's what I really want to do.

Sorry to hear about that. However, you still have three ADN programs that you say can still accept you. So, apply to them, get accepted and do your best. I am sure you will then be able to apply to BSN programs after.

My school allows 0 repeats. Well, you can repeat as much as you'd like, but they don't count. Your first grade is the only one taken into consideration.

I'd make sure your repeats mean you can't apply, instead of meaning that anything beyond your first (or second) grade is doesn't factor in.

If I'm wrong, then do the ADN thing, then an ABSN thing.

Community colleges in CA allow repeats, you just lose points off your cut score. Only applies to vote sciences and English. Go to the cut score calculator on the Chancellor's website to see your score. Find out minimum score accepted at the schools you'd like to apply to, and you'll know where to apply.

Hoping you're smart enough to know that community colleges in CA offer extraordinary educations, and many, if not all have arrangements with nearby CSU. If you keep your grades in Nursing school at a 3.0 or better, you can most likely get into their BSN CNECM program.

Don't get discouraged, you can do this.

I retook almost all of my science pre reqs. I had C's originally but of course those grades were competitive. When I was applying to schools, I had to read their requirements as well as I was sometimes disqualified because of the retakes. And there are some schools who take off points. Then there are some who take the best grade.

It really all depends at the program youre looking at. Each have their own specified requirements and its all confusing. Luckily the program I got into looked at my better grades than my original ones into consideration!

Hey! Original poster here. For some reason I never realized there were responses to this thread because I never saw any notifications. However, I got the email notification for your response! 

To answer your question, yes I did! I got accepted to a few schools that didn't have a prereq repeat limit. I graduated in 2019 and am now a surgical ICU nurse.

I'm just going to go ahead and elaborate since there were some people inquiring about this a few years back. Hopefully this is helpful to anyone who may stumble upon this thread in the future.

I got accepted to Los Angeles County College of Nursing, Long Beach City College, Golden West College, and I think there was one more that I don't remember. These are a few of the ADN programs I found near the LA area with point based systems. What helped me was the fact that I had extra things such as prior volunteering experience at a hospital, 1 year work experience as a CNA, prior Bachelor's degree, letters of rec, etc. And the science prereqs I retook were A's. So if you have the same problem I had, just look for a point based system and make sure you've got the points to back yourself up.

I attended Los Angeles County College of Nursing and it was the best decision I made! As it is a program run by LA County itself, our clinicals were all at various LA County Hospitals such as LAC + USC Medical Center, Harbor UCLA Medical Center, etc. Because I am employed at a LA County hospital, my tuition was $2,800 total for a nursing degree. And because I was a county student and had clinicals at the facilities, I had a higher chance of getting hired there as well.
