Too many science prerequisite repeats??

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone has the same problem as me. I'm currently looking into applying to a bunch of different nursing programs (ADN and BSN at Junior Colleges and State Universities) throughout California, mostly in Los Angeles and OC areas. However, I keep coming across the same policy at most of these schools that makes me ineligible for almost every school but 3 community college ADN programs: the repeat policy.

Here's the problem. Most schools only allow students to have one repeat, with some more generous schools allowing 2 science repeats total. I, unfortunately, have had 3 repeats. 2 in Anatomy and 1 in Physiology. And because of this, I can't apply to most nursing programs and now am limited to only 3. However, I'm so scared that because I'm only applying to 3 different programs, I will not be able to have a career in nursing.

I guess I'm mostly wondering if I'm all alone in this problem.

And also, if anyone knows any schools in CA that doesn't have as strict of a repeat policy.

I've been really discouraged lately about nursing, but it's what I really want to do.

That is soooo great to hear!! There are a lot of people in that same situation Im one of them. This is one of the silliest requirements that someone who has taken a class twice might not be successful in nursing school, and it only puts up a road block and does nothing to stop the determination. I'll be applying this fall for the first time and your update has renewed my motivation. Thanks for responding!!!

I completely agree with you! Good luck!

Hi Sophia ! I saw on your last post a couple hours ago that you got into a nursing school and are a nurse now! Congratulations!
I am actually in the same boat as you were and have no idea where to attend due to my repeats, and I am stuck. I was wondering if you have any advice on any schools that you know that take repeats ?

Hello Sophiaaa,

I just wanted to thank you for your post! I recently moved from San Bernardino County to LA County. I have somewhat the same issue as you did. I had began nursing pre-req's ages ago but had to drop out twice (too late for W's) due to conflicts with work. At the time I had taken Anatomy 35 because 4 yr colleges didn't accept Anatomy 10 for transfer. I ended up obtaining my LVN because the wait for RN programs in CA was so ridiculous. However after graduating I didn't even start work as an LVN because I made more money working elsewhere. I have always kept my LVN valid though. Years later, when I was more financially stable, I attempted to resume again. They had changed the rules and Anatomy 10 was accepted. So I was told that I could take Anatomy 10 since they were technically different courses than the 35 they wouldn't be considered a repeat. That was in San Bernardino County, at Mt. San Antonio Comm College. I started Anatomy 10 but we unexpectedly purchased a home in San Pedro. Thankfully I was able to withdraw from the class and only got the W on my transcript! We moved in Jan 2020 and then Covid so I just started Anatomy this fall, 2021 in LA County. Los Angeles Harbor College. I started before they reviewed my transcripts because I had already lost so much time due to COVID and I just assumed the general rules would be the same. They finally got around to reviewing my transcripts (took forever due to staffing issues, COVID) and they said they have a "No recency requirement" on their pre-req's. They consider Anatomy 35 and Anatomy 10 to be equivalent which means that the Anatomy that I took way back in 2004 counts as repeats. I now have 3 repeats (including the course I am taking now) and am not eligible to apply for their program.

I was completely disheartened as I am 43, have a family and work. Im stressing out to juggle everything and was thinking OK maybe this is a sign that it's just not meant to be. I hadn't even googled other schools because I am currently taking Micro and Anatomy so Im pretty swamped. I just figured OK, deep breath, keep my focus on doing well and finish these courses then I can reevaluate things. I cant get sidetracked by this. Anyhow, I did quickly Google the subject of having too many repeats and your post came up! I read all the way down to your reply at the end and I was so excited! Your post gave me some hope that I'll be able to find something that will work! Im sorry to give such a long story but I wanted to say thank you so much for replying even though the thread is very old. I read it and greatly benefitted from it! You gave me a spark of hope when I felt pretty disappointed and uncertain (and I have two tests today so I definitely needed that spark!) Thanks so very much and I hope that all is going very well for you!
