Three years.....

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I have been e-mail corresponding with my school of choice for a few months now going back and forth with my decisions about nursing school or dietetics and now she decides to tell me that it takes three years to complete the BSN degree after getting the prereqs. I know this may not seem bad to some but I have been taking my prereqs since Spring of 2010. Including the summer, been taking full loads like 14 hours in the spring and 18 in the fall only 10 in the summer though. I am still not done! I have to finish this semester then go to school in the summer and the fall to finish my prereqs! This is so frustrating to me, and I understand that some of you have gone through more I just felt like venting a little. This is going to be expensive and a long time to be out of work. I asked her was there anyway to speed it up by taking classes in the summer (nursing clinical) she said no that is not how the program works. Boo! Oh well, is this normal for BSN programs?

Each program is different, yes some BSN programs do have a 3 yr track. I went with my ADN program because it would take me 3.5 years as opposed to 5 years for the closest BSN program. Their RN track is 3 years plus the 2 years it would take me to do Pre-reqs. My ADN program is a little accelerated so its 1.5 yrs, plus the 2 years it took me to do my pre-reqs It will probably take me another 1.5 yrs to complete a BSN when I finish my ADN so it made more sense for me to do ADN and then bridge to BSN or in my state I can skip BSN and go straight for MSN. Each program is different so you can always check out other local programs to see how long they are if you are looking for a program that takes less time.

The BSN I plan to do is 5 semesters (no summers). I think many are 2 - 2 1/2 years. Three seems a bit much but the length often has to do with the fact that courses build on one another so you can't just take 18 credits a term and be done.

There is only one 3yr BSN in my area...and its because they add on more clinicals...so 3yrs can be a good thing!
