Thoughts on taking Phlebotomy course while I wait?

I have put my app in for the nursing program at several different places, and I'm 99.9% sure I will not get in the first time, due to the point system and so many repeat applications who get extra pts for the wait.

Has anyone ever taken a course like phlebotomy certification while you wait? The way I see it, it can only help my skills.. right? It's only a one semester commitment. 8 weeks of 2x/wk lecture, and 3 weeks of 5x/wk clinicals.

I'd love some thoughts and opinions. I don't want to do something that will be a waste of time.. or if it's something I'll repeat once I'm in the ADN program.

I think it can only help you. These are skills that you will already possess once you start your program which will help you with clinical and if you work at a hospital as a Phlebotomist it could help you get your foot in the door so to speak.

I haven't found that phlebotomy experience (mine is extensive) helps at all in the job market. Also, the equipment and technique are different than IV skills. Few hospitals have RNs doing straight draws (some do); most have phlebs doing it, so really it won't be something you use a lot.

I think a CNA course would serve you better, honestly. Having the basics of nursing down will help you in school a ton, and you'll be working side by side with nurses.
