The Road to Nursing

Hey guys. I'm currently in my second year of my undergrad with a 3.0 GPA. I'm worried that I won't get into the nursing program at my school. As of now, I'm currently an Exercise and Health Science major, majoring in Health Sciences. Assuming I won't get in, would it be beneficial or logical to complete my undergrad with the Health Science major, try to get an Associate Degree in Nursing, and then a Bachelor's in Nursing?

With getting your undergrad in Health sciences you could go on with an Accelerated BSN program. But, getting an ADN and then a BSN is an option as well. Just be sure that if you go the ADN route, that you will be able to obtain employment while you are working on your BSN. Some hospitals do not hire ADN nurses. Do your research and it will guide you to your path. BEst wishes.

Most ADN programs are as competitive as BSN programs. Find out what the requirements are at your school. Accelerated programs are also competitive. Does your school have an entrance exam? If you can do well on that, maybe it won't be too much of an issue. Each school has their own requirements.

If you do go ADN route, just know that the hospital is not your only option for employment. Also, most hospitals will hire an ADN but you have to acquire your BSN within 5 years.

Please make sure you do very thorough investigation of ABSN program requirements before you decide that this might be an alternative path. In my part of the country, those programs utilize cumulative GPA as a basis for admission. Based upon the information you have provided, this could be a significant challenge for you.
