So many nursing majors in my class!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hey everyone! I'm taking my prereqs, and in my sociology class, every single person in the class is majoring in nursing. There are 32 of us. Is this seriously what its like? I read things on here constantly about the field being flooded... Is it really this bad?! I've been told many of these people will end up not making it or changing their minds, but its freaking me out a little bit.

Have you experienced anything like this?

I remember when A&P 1 started. At the beginning, there were 40 of us in the lab section. By the end of the second week, half were gone. At the end of the class, 9 were left.

A lot of people go into pre-nursing/nursing...but when it comes down to getting the hard work done, then you'll see who really wants to pursue it.

A lot of people go into pre-nursing/nursing...but when it comes down to getting the hard work done, then you'll see who really wants to pursue it.

Imagine taking 21 credits a quarter with A&P II, 200 level O-chem, 2 English classes with reading 100+ pages a day while working 25 hours a week and taking care of 4 younger siblings and a tired, sick mother!

That was the hardest quarter ever for me! But I strived to make it through and I did, so I agree that those who really want to go into nursing will pursue it hardcore.

This is exactly the point I am trying to make whenever I say people should have their hearts in it. I love this website and it has been so helpful to me, but I cannot understand the hostility that gets drawn up the minute the word "calling" comes into play... People get so angry! Like you said, with the puking and ass wiping... You can't do that day in and day out unless you really want to be there making a difference. If it's just a paycheck for you, things like that are going to eventually really weigh you down like you said. Someone else who agreed with that miserable poster before said they wanted co-workers who are dedicated to nursing as a career, unafraid to speak up and advocate for better wages... I really am sorry that people don't realize that you can be both caring and career minded as a nurse. I was under the impression that a good nurse was both anyway.

And the thought that you don't have to think of it as anything other than a job... I find that ridiculous. In the nursing program I will be applying to, they have classes that really call your empathy into play and stress it as being something important. "Dying with dignity" is one of those classes. Anyone who thinks they can deal with the sick and the dying and handle it the same they would any other job... I can't understand that.

Cannot agree more!

It's quite simple really.

Real estate bubble. Financial bubble. Nursing bubble. Student loans bubble. Education bubble. Tuition bubble. Health insurance bubble.

Trends. Do you see you where this is going?

That aside,

If you choose to pursue and succeed, you can go back to this thread and celebrate to some fine wine.

If you choose to pursue and fail, well, you got all your advice and flashing warning signs here.

Just don't regret.

Just an opinion, but the puke and "poop"-wiping are the easiest parts of being a nurse.

I was thinking exactly the same thing! There are so many nursing majors in my A&P 1 class, and only a limited amount of seats for the nursing program next fall. I think it's great that so many people are interested in nursing, but I have a problem with some people in my class who complain about how hard the pre-requisites are, and how much work there is, and how they're so stressed out, yet don't participate in class or do any of the work that is required. I feel like they are the type of people who think nursing is so easy and anyone can do it without having to work hard (plus they're not the friendliest people). I've heard some people in my class talking about how difficult the math aptitude test to get into our nursing program is (there's a practice test on the website, mostly conversions and word problems), but that is the kind of math that we will have to do as nurses. What are they expecting once they get into the nursing program? The last thing we need is nurses who are rude, complain, and hate their jobs because they thought it would be easy.

I really value the opinion of someone who chooses a picture of a gremlin to represent themselves on a public forum. Justgoaway, justjohn.

Wow. What John said was actually true. You seem to have a really hard time hearing things you don't want to hear. This will also stack highly against you in nursing and in nursing school. Feel free to judge this against my avatar all you want, but David Tennant in drag does not make what I say any less true.

I've taken chem, but I'm saving A&P for a semester so I can take it alone to give it 100% my all and get an A. I hate to sound rude, but I hope the number does drop. I'm sure someone will read this and take what I'm saying the wrong way, but is it even possible that this many people truly want to be nurses? The dirty aspects of the job and all? I find it hard to believe every last one of these people are really up for every aspect of the job and maybe some of them think its just about handing out pills all day. Yikes.

And what are you gonna do when you have a full patient load, admissions, discharges, patient teaching, puking, poop, infection control issues, med administration, treatments.. and somebody crumping..........and the list goes on and on... and on.....

You don't get to say" I'm only going to care for half my load because I want to give it my best".

I say focus on yourself, don't worry about anyone else and see what the next few years brings to you. There may be those question your reasons.

Not everyone who gets an A in class is a stellar nurse...you'll see...or not

....and yeah, you did sound rude.

I'm going to kind of side with John here as well. Nursing programs are the equivalent of 2-3 sciences at a time. If you can't hack A&P with college English, you might have an issue down the road.

I sort of agree with you on wanting people to drop out, mainly for a different reason, though. There are a good many pre-nursing students in my classes that are just coasting through and talking about the money they'll make in nursing, but they aren't even really trying to learn the material in class. I overheard someone in particular say, "What does this chemistry stuff have to do with nursing?" .....are you kidding me?! Geez!

Personally, I want to absorb as much of the sciences and prereq knowledge as I can, so I can become a well-rounded nurse. Money is definitely a thought, but being in total control of my new career and knowing exactly what I'm doing and why are way more important. :)
