Should I wait? or should i Go?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hey guys and gals, so I am in a predicament.. Im just about finish my pre-reqs this semester and ive been looking a nursing schools, im in soCal and ill miss the Fall 2012 deadline but make it for the Spring 2013 semester at alot of the Community Colleges here. Now ive also been looking at Kaplan College in San Diego which i can actually start in Fall of 2012 but there is a higher pricetag...

so now im in a predicament: Should i wait and save money and apply at the CC for Spring 2013 (its still a bit of a crapshoot since they base it off a multi-criteria system) or Spend the extra money and Start sooner at the Fall Semester?

Honestly, I'd avoid for-profit schools like the plague. I'd try for the community colleges first before signing up for a for-profit school.

but This for-profit school has a pretty good reputation.. its not like im going to Moms Nursing school in Compton in some strip mall..

Part of me dosnt want to wait.. but part of me is like Ouch on the pricetag..

I went and actually looked at the tuition cost and I still say wait. They cost more than most private schools and it really doesn't make sense to pay that much for an associates degree. You might want to even consider going out of state? You could even look at getting your BSN and it still would probably be cheaper.

Another thing to consider is do other schools, other than for-profits, accept their units? Would you be able to get your ADN at Kaplan and then do a RN-BSN program at a state school? For most for-profits, the answer is no so that may be another thing to consider.

Ultimately though it is up to you and whatever makes you happy but yeah ouch.

Well if you ever think of moving I know kaplan has an awful rep here. I say wait and use kaplan as a back up

I would not spend the extra money to attend a school whose credits will not transfer. The day will probably come when you want to continue your education and then you would find out how that small amount of extra time really came at a higher price tag than you should have paid.

I agree th the other responses. Kaplan does not have a great rep in the medical field. Schools like Kaplan can be good for the tech industry and others like it, but you cannot beat the experience that So Cal CCs have in nursing. If you are willing to spend more, look at Mount Saint Marys. I do not know their app deadline, but if you are going to pay out the nose for Kaplan, at least pay for a school with a good reputation. Keep in mind that some of the CCs use a lottery system (moorpark comes to mind) so you are not necessarily guaranteed admission in a decent amount of time. Others have long waiting lists. I went with MSMC for that reason, they accept based off transcripts and applications just like any other college....none of the 2 year waiting. Then again, do the math and see if going faster really is worth it financially. Will you make more your first year than the delta between the community college tuition and these other schools? Something to consider.

Im looking at MSMC right now.. one thing that i saw was they are WASC accredited which is nice. How much is their tuition for the ADN? and i have part of my pre-reqs done do they accept partial pre-reqs being done and i could finish the rest when i get there?

I'm in the same boat.. I really don't want to wait a whole year or more to apply at the CC's here. Then I still may not even get in, then id have to wait till the following year to re-apply. By then i could be done with school and working as a nurse. I'm ready to start my career. I know its more money, but its worth it to me to me. I'm gonna go with Kaplan.

if i were in your shoes i prolly wait than spend more bucks, cause i think ill end up being a nurse anyway then why should i pay more its just 11months away. well thats how i see it cause money is VERY TIGHT for me LOL :)

Don't put yourself into extra debt if you don't have to. The job market for new grads in southern CA sucks and no one knows when it will improve...and it may not have improved by the time you graduate for either program.

And to be honest, a lot of employers around here prefer BSNs...having an ADN is not a career-killer, but it will be harder to land something. For what you'd pay at Kaplan you could probably get a BSN at some of the local colleges.

Also, credits from for-profit schools, even accredited ones, don't always transfer as well as ones from CC. That's something to keep in mind if you are planning to pursue a bachelors/masters/PhD down the road, unless you plan to stay with Kaplan (or whatever for-profit school) for the whole educational ride.

entry level BSN Programs in So-cal are extremely competitive considering there are a limited amount of them.. alot of them require at least 3.8-4.0 GPA to be considered..

and another thing is Im more than willing to relocate if the job market here isnt great after i graduate.. i just dont wanna be stuck waiting years and years trying to get into a program.. when i could be in and out..

im just having second thoughts about Kaplan due to its lack of ability to transfer to other schools..
