NLN Scores for Oakton Community College - Fall 2010

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

My application is complete for Fall 2010 at Oakton Community College. I am freaked out  right now as I don't know if I have good enough NLN scores to get in. Does anyone know what a "good enough" score is? The minimum required is a composite of 60, and 50 on the verbal. From what I've heard, people are scoring in the 90's (with 99 being a perfect score per a nursing advisor...). My composite is an 89 and my verbal is 97 :uhoh3:. Anyone know if this is good/bad/ugly? In other words, do you think I have a chance of getting accepted.....or not???

Thanks!!

I think ur score is pretty good if you are talking about the percentile. I have just recently found out that the score they are looking at is the "All" and not the DI OR AD according to a nursing advisor in the composite percentile score. I have also found out that some years the accept students with a score in the 80% and sometimes they dont even go below the 90s. It really just depends in the score of other applicants. I am in the same pool as you however my score is a bit lower but all I can do is hope that I get in somehow, Good Luck pandorasbox :clown:

Hi Jessicuy!

Thanks for responding to my question. Yes, my scores are from the ALL composite percentile score and the ALL in the verbal. I did speak to the nursing advisor/admissions person today and she told me that she has never seen a student NOT get into the program with the same score as me.....of course, she couldn't guarantee anything as students are scoring quite high these days (90+). I am so unsure of what will happen!! But I certainly hope that you and I get in!!!! :yeah:

Also, she told me that she's waiting for 80 more test scores as there was another NLN exam given on Friday, February 26th. I am a bit shocked by this as my understanding was that the file needed to be COMPLETED by the 26th!!!! I don't understand why they'd allow more students to take the exam so late in the game? Does that make sense? It's like they're creating more and more competition for this fall.

What do you think???

I totally agree with you on that! It's creating more competition to those that were able to get into the 1st two original test dates. By adding an additional test date it makes it very hard for those that scored less that 90% to have a shot at admission. I'm so insecure about my score although it is on the 80's and i wish it was May already so I would have a definite answer. I am praying to God that I make the cut though and hopefull we will be classmates for the fall 2010 nursing program. Good luck and thanks for the info. u got from the nursing advisor cause I havent been able to get a hold of them lately.

I forgot to mention that the advisor told me they're planning on getting the decision letters out by April 1. So at least that means we'll only have to wait for 1 month, not till May 3 as the letter says. I hope what she told me is true as this wait time is killing me!!! Especially since I now know there's more applicants thrown in the mix.....ugh!!! I just can't believe they'd do something like that. I mean, the deadlines were clearly indicated and we followed the rules. I worked really hard to meet the deadline as I'm sure you did too. But then latecomers are allowed to break the rules. Not fair at all..... Sorry if I sound a bit resentful, but this just shows me that following the rules doesn't always work to your advantage! Oh well......

Jessicuy,

It's me again!!! :clown: I found some other stuff out and want to share it with you. I am very new to the forum so I don't have PM capabilities. Anyhow, I was at the DP campus today and stopped at the testing center to get some information on a test for a friend of mine. While there I casually started talking to the ladies behind the desk and found out that the last NLN exam was on 02/20, not 02/26. I was like, "what???" I was told very specifically by the nursing advisor that there was a test on 02/26 and she was waiting for 80 more test results. I think (hope!!!) that I may have been given wrong information by the advisor. Maybe she was really thinking about 02/20 and said 02/26 by mistake!!!! Gosh....I sure hope that is the case!!!! :p If all of this is true, that means we will not have extra competition!! I mean, geez!!! the competition is tough as it is, so having more and more people to contend with is just mind boggling!!!

Well.....wanted to give you the latest info..... I pray it is true!!! Take care and have a great weekend!!

Thxs for the info. Pandorasbox, what I know is that at first there were two original test dates which I believe were @ the beginning of January and February. Then they added an extra test date which was on the 20th of Feb. b/c there were too many applicants that were asking for placement into nln testing sessions. So in total there were 3 test sessions which does mean they added one more session and extended the deadline until the last scores were received by the nursing department. So they did added more competition to those who got placed in the 1st two sessions. Lets just stay positive and hope for that acceptance letter in the next couple of months. Is this the first time ur applying? This is the 1st time and I am so excited/nervous at the same time its just a mixtures of emotions.

Hey Jessicuy! :)

Just saw your message. Yes, there were 3 test exams. However, the majority of the people that took it on the 20th were retakes from the 02/10 test date. The reason that happened is because the test environment was really bad due to a children's Valentine's party that was scheduled the same day as the NLN exam!! It was a huge error on the part of the scheduling people so the college realized that it was unfair to the test takers and allowed the retake. ----- Yes, this is my first time applying to the program. I am so nervous cuz if I don't get in this fall, I will have to apply for spring and I think it will be more competitive then. 28 spots as opposed to 58 gives me a slimmer chance!!! :crying2: I do hope and pray that we both get in!!! How are you doing with the wait? I go through ups and downs.....everyone tells me to calm down and just wait to receive the letter. Yeah....easier said than done!!!! Do you have any idea how many students have applied for fall? I have not been able to get an answer to that question. I think if I had an idea of the number, I'd feel better (I think anyway.....). Also, we have to think that not everyone that took the exam this year is going to be applying for Fall; just like there could be other students that took it before this year that are applying.......but you're right, we should try to keep positive. Keep me posted if you hear any other news. I will do the same!!!

Take care!! :nurse:

OMG.... I THOUGHT THERE WERE 80 SPOTS TO BE FILLED FOR FALL SEMESTER!!!! THAT REALLY SUCKS! I just needed to vent b/c i thought there were more ppl being accepted for fall. Ne way i called the nursing advisor earlier today to find out if my score is competitive enough and she said that it was very hard to say b/c some yrs they dont go below 85s and others they go as low as 70s which is what happened last fall. I am not doing really good w/ the wait im overwhelmed, anxious, nervous, excited, sad, happy.... im all over the place. I have no idea how many ppl actually applied for fall this time but i would love to know, i can def image that it was at least 100-200. I cant wail for April to receive the letter, the nursing advisor said that if I dont get in I'll b getting a letter telling me a waitlisted #. :crying2: Which of course I am not hoping for:nurse:

Jessicuy,

I know exactly how you're feeling!!! I am going through ups, downs, stress, nervousness, etc. etc. :crying2: No one understands until they're going through it!!! My family and bf keep telling me to chill and I'm like, "yeah, you try it!!" Anyway, the deal with the "80" students in fall is because they accept 58 students plus 20 "conditional" students. The conditional students must have completed the minimum nursing prerequisites plus BIO131 and 132. One is considered a "conditional" student if the NLN verbal portion is between 30-49. I think their math and science would have to be fairly good, at least that's what the advisor told me. You probably know all this already, so I apologize if I'm giving you repeat information. ---- The nursing advisor also told me they're getting quite a few 90+ scores. I can tell you that the people that I know that got 90+ are people that have taken the exam 2-3 times already. I even heard of someone that has taken it 4 times. So....what does that mean? Practice makes perfect, I guess!!! On the other hand, we still have HOPE :redpinkhe. Let's just pray we make the cut for this fall so we can rest easy once and for all!!! Also, like I said before, not ALL the people that took the exam this year have applied for the fall. I am sure a lot of them were giving it a "trial" run. I know I was advised by some people last year to take the exam as "practice". I didn't do it, so now I just have to wait this thing out. Let's keep a positive attitude..... As always, if I find out anything new I will let you know. Please do the same. Take care!!

 Sorry to bother you again!!! But can you clarify what you mean by "some yrs they dont go below 85s and others they go as low as 70s which is what happened last fall." ---- Do you mean that last fall they did accept students with scores in the 70's, or they DID NOT take anyone below 85?

See!!! I'm freaking out!!!

Well the nursing advisor said that for fall 2009 they admitted students with scores in the high 70s, she told me that I had a very strong score but it all depends on the other scores of the remaining applicants. I really think that your score is very good. Its almost in the 90s so I would be pretty confident with a score like yours. I am keeping a positive attitude so hope that helps me get throught this awful waiting period.
