My application is complete for Fall 2010 at Oakton Community College. I am freaked out right now as I don't know if I have good enough NLN scores to get in. Does anyone know what a "good enough" score is? The minimum required is a composite of 60, and 50 on the verbal. From what I've heard, people are scoring in the 90's (with 99 being a perfect score per a nursing advisor...). My composite is an 89 and my verbal is 97
. Anyone know if this is good/bad/ugly? In other words, do you think I have a chance of getting accepted.....or not???
Thanks!!
:anpom:OMG PANDORASBOX............................ U'VE GIVEN ME SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH HOPE RIGHT NOW IM SUPER HOPEFUL. I hope u understood the advisor correctly b/c it does gives us much more chances of getting in for fall. I love this website, thx u 4 the update. I called the advisor on Monday and she told me that the nursing committe will be meeting next week to make the decisions and that the letters will be sent out after that, so we should have the letters by April 1st no later than that. I cannot wait any longer I feel as if is an eternal wait time.
I am very sure that she said "100 something"...... I repeated it and she repeated it. I got as excited as you, but it seems so out of the realm for Oakton to have so few applicants.......I hope it's true!!!! It just seems so weird though, that I keep churning that # in my head. Hmmm......if the # is more or less accurate, why didn't more students apply? Or are they just finding out that students who applied months earlier than the deadline, and who had every intention of completing the prerequisites by Feb 26, didn't? That is exactly what the advisors are doing right now .... weeding the "incompletes" from the "completes".
Then next week the ranking begins!!! I am going to be sooooooooo nervous when that letter arrives!!! I wonder if there's any way to tell the difference between letters? Is one thicker than the other, is it a bigger envelope???
Oh Geez!!! I should go back to bed!!! LOL......
:lol2:Thats great!!!! I believe many people apply but dont have their files completed before the deadline which is prob. why the # of applicants is much lower than we had thought. YEEEY:yeah: I actually do wonder about that letter.... now u really got me thinking! I wish we would know by just looking at the envelope, I remember when I got the nln envelope.... my heart was beating soooo fast :heartbeat. I think my heart will be ready to burst once I see the letter from the Nursing Department in my mailbox in a couple of weeks.... Believe me, having some 1 to share all these feelings w/ eases my nerves...
I think the conditional students are English as their second language.
Is that a requirement to be considered a conditional student? To have English as your second language? The reason I ask is because I applied in December and have no recollection of the advisor asking me anything about my ethnic background, race, 1st language, etc.
From what I was told last week is that the verbal portion of the exam must be in the range of 30-49 and the other scores must be fairly good. So that means that anyone, even native speakers should have a chance to be accepted as conditional students as long as they meet the college's requirements. I do not fall under that category, but it would be unjust to give preference to an English-as-a-second-language student over a native speaker if both are equal in scores (verbal, math, science).
I totally agree with you that it isn't fair! In the opening part of the NLN they ask if English is your second language. Would we get a break if we went to another country and didn't speak their language? Probably not!
You're right, the NLN does ask that question.....but does OCC go by that? I would think they'd keep record of that information from the application to the school, not use the NLN exam to gather that type of info. But like I said, I was never asked to disclose those type of questions at the time of my application
. I hope that is normal procedure......
Have you heard how things are going with the ranking process? I received the letter that states we'd be notified my May 3 regarding acceptance/rejection decision. However, I was then told we should hear back by April 1 . I also spoke to one of my classmates who told me that as of last Friday she had not received any such letter. She knows one other person who also did not receive a letter. Do you have any idea what that means?????
I heard that we will be receiving letters by the end of March. I am so tired of the wait! I don't know how they flag the ESL people but they must do it some way. The counselor told me that the extra 20 or so spots are for ESL students. So I said what about the people that are in the middle that miss the cut off and are not ESL students-I said that wasn't fair. So there is only 58 spots and 20 ESL's. I just don't understand why qualified people can't get into their community college because there is not enough teachers to teach the subject. Who is going to work at a college when they can make more money at a hospital?
They always give you the latest date possible on those letters so you won't be contacting them and bothering them. I would say you would hear in the next week or so for acceptance or rejection.
I am so nervous about that letter!!! I've had a couple of good days not thinking about it too much, but that's because I was dealing with other stuff that was occupying most of my time. Now reading your comments have made me nervous, LOL!!! The part about probably receiving a letter in the next week or so....... I mean, I'd like to know once and for all what the decision is, but I'm also scared to death!!!! I don't know if my scores are good enough to get in. I know I've been told that it all depends on the other applicants' scores. So.....who knows????
The advisors have told me they're seeing 90+ scores and I scored an 89. So, I don't want to feel too confident so as to avoid a big letdown if I don't get accepted. A girl in one of my classes told me about a friend of hers who got a 93 on the composite percentile score and a 60 something on the verbal portion and she was not accepted for Spring 2010. The only thing I could think of is that she is an ESL student applying for Spring, and in Spring they do not accept conditional students.
I am just so antsy!!!! Are you experiencing the same? If I'd scored in the 90's I think I'd be feeling a lot better!!!
I feel that some of these people take it so many times and eventually they are going to go up against a dumb class (because it is based on who is taking it at that moment). I really think it is crazy that you can take it so many times and go from a 70 to a 93. I was on the wait list for spring but you go back into the same pot again which I don't think is fair. You should be the next to get in if you are on a wait list! There is nothing I can do I only took the test once and we will have to see-I am kind of sick of this! That girl didn't get in because of her English score-they wont even rank you if the verbal isn't high for spring. I wish you luck-try not to think about it!
Sully100 - We share the same sentiments!!! I've only taken the NLN once. I know people that have taken it multiple times. Case in point, a person in one of my current classes took it last year (2009). She then took it last month; and because there was a problem with the test environment, students were allowed a retake 10 days later (I don't have a problem with that because after all, it wasn't their fault a children's party was going on next door....). Anyhow, on the first exam in February she got a 60 something in the composite percentile score. Then, 10 days later she scored a 92!!! Can you imagine that???? The explanation to that is because the questions were the same and she remembered what she needed to study from one exam to the next.
I suppose I shouldn't be too down on myself because I still scored fairly well for not having studied too much!!! My intention was to study for about 3 weeks prior to the exam, but due to procrastination during the winter break I only studied for about 3 hours!!!
What waitlist number were you in spring? Do they send rejection letters at the same time as acceptance letters? and do they waitlist everyone that doesn't get accepted? Sorry for all the questions...... I am a career changer and am not the traditional college age........So for me time is of the essence!!! If I had to wait till next fall (cuz I have no illusions of being accepted in spring), that would totally suck!!!!

Helllloooooo Jessicuy! :heartbeat
Here's another update: Spoke to another advisor today and I asked her if they already knew how many applicants they had. She told me she wasn't sure exactly, but she said she thought it was "100 something....". Doesn't that seem kinda low? I've always heard they get 300 or so applicants for fall. Anyway, she also told me that right now they're weeding out the applicants that did not fulfill all the prerequisites by the deadline. They have not started ranking yet, so that gives us more hope (less applicants overall, and applicants being pulled from the applicant pool due to non-compliance).
I hope I understood her correctly cuz I get all nervous when I speak to them, LOL ....... have you heard anything else????
