NLN pre-admission exam

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hey,

so in March I am taking my nln pre-admission exam. I want to make sure I get the right book to study for it. I have looked at the McGraw hill book is that a good book? or is there another one I should consider. so tell me what book worked for you the best?

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

I just took the NLN PAX on Saturday. I used the McGraw Hill study guide and I thought it was helpful for the exam. I obviously have not received my scores yet, but the material in the book was definitely similar to the questions asked on the test. I would focus mainly on the science section as it was definitely the most difficult! I spent about 2 weeks on the science section alone...about 2 hours a day or so and I still felt that I was guessing on every answer! I have never been great at science but it was difficult for me.

Best of luck to you in March!

I'm also taking the NLN in March here in FL. I'm in Pensacola. I ordered the study book directly from the NLN site. Review Guide for RN Pre-Entrance Exam. 2nd Edition. I also have the Nursing School and Allied Health Entrance Exams study guide that I had first and it seems to be very good for preparation. It's put out by Peterson's.

Thank you so much for all the information from both of yall. I wanted to just get the McGraw one b/c its at barnes and noble instead of ordering b/c its christmas break and I want to study now. i'll be busy in spring with classes. but im glad the McGraw did help thats what I wanted to know if it related to the test. and I think i'll look up on that study guide by peterson, more pratice better!

Hi Miche22... i am taking the test on Feb10 and I have the study guide for the nln... i've been reviewing the book and taking the tests. So far the only test i've gotten to is the verbal ability but i am having trouble with those words. Does the actual test contain so many of those difficult words? I am very nervouse b/c my school requieres a minimun score of 50 on the verbal ability. Please let me know how hard this test really is and also keep us posted on how you did on the test...if u dont mind. thxs and good luck!:yeah:

Jessicuy--

Good luck on the test in February! My school requires a 50% as well...I feel pretty confident I will get above that on the Reading/Vocab and Math sections, but it is the science I am worried about! There was not nearly as much vocab on the exam as I expected-it was mostly reading comprehension. I'd say there were maybe 16 vocab questions? Then the rest consisted of three of four reading passages with questions. The passage would say something like "Julie has red hair", and the question would be "What color hair did Julie have?"....ridiculous right! Don't get me wrong some of the vocab words, I had never heard of or knew the meaning, but not a lot!

I am so nervous about my results...I don't want the science to hold me back! I heard it takes about 10 days to get the results back. It has only been 2 days; the test administrator didn't get the exams in the mail till Monday morning. I suppose I won't get my scores till after the holidays...I hate the wait!

Do you need to take any other exams for other schools you are applying to? I had to take the HESI A2 exam as well...that was much better. It is computerized so you get your results as soon as you finish! ahhhh the stressss!!!!

Hi

My school uses the NLN PAX-RN also but they advised me to get the "National League For Nursing RN Pre-Entrance Exam" third edition. It's published by Jones and Bartlett and to my understanding, the NLN are responsible for the review content within. I'm not sure, I only say that because there are no authors listed and the book carries the NLN logo and endorsement. However, I ordered the book online and received it within a week, although when I went to the bookstore to view my spring semester books, I saw the review book right alongside the Nursing Material. Go figure.

So far I find it very helpful. I consider myself to be very talented in vocabulary and reading comp but there's even some words in there that gave me pause. :D

Good luck with your choice.

Thanks so much for your reply, I needed to know from someone that took the test recently how the verbal ability part of the test was... i am nervous but i'm studying almost everyday and i will continue until i feel comfortable.

My school doesnt requiere us to take any other test, only the nln. We do have to be CNAs to even apply and also have all of the pre-requisites done b4 even being considered for admission. I am a bit more relaxed now that you've told me that there really arent as many vocab words as there is reading comprehension. I am confident enough for the reading comprenhesion, another thing that has me worried is the science because of the large content it covers. But hey it is wat it is!!! I'm pretty sure you'll do fine on your test
