Net practice question...whats the right answer? Is the NET Study guide wrong?

Question is, 4 1/4% of (?) = 8.5.

A. 80.

B. 100.

C. 200.

D. 50.

The way I did this question was as follows:

4 1/4% = 425%. 425% changed to decimal is 4.25. Thus to solve, it is simple algebra: 4.25x=8.5. The answer should be 2, not 200 as the answer keys says it is in the net study guide. Am I missing something here?

Same goes for this problem.

2/3% of (?) = 33.3

A. 5000

b. 400

c. 600

d. 1000

Answer is 50, not 5000 as the answer key says. Am I just fundamentally getting something mixed up here? It has been a while since i did this kind of math so I am a bit rusty. Thanks guys.

4 1/4% = .0425 not 4.25

.0425x = 8.5

Answer = 200

Same with the other one.

4,1/4% = 4.25% = 0.0425

0.0425x = 8.5

8.5/0.0425 = 200

Thanks...ive gotta get the cobwebs out of my head fast!

The first one is 200. First you have to turn the fraction into what is called an improper fraction. 4 (1/4) = ((4 × 4) + 1)/4 =17/4. Turn that into a percentage, you have to divide it by 100. Which looks like 17/4 OVER 100/1. Which equals 17/400..then plug that into the p/100 (n) = r equation.

Multiply each side by 400, you get 17n = 8.5 (400). 17n equals 3400. N = 200.

I know I did a BAD job of explaining..but I know someone can probably explain better!

I'm off to class now..will explain the 2nd problem when I get out!

See!! I knew I took the long way..but it's the only way I know for sure :-)

Finished the exam. Did well :specs:. I was only given 30 math questions though...i thought we were supposed to get 60.
