Medical unit secretary turned nurse

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I was just wondering if there was any medical unit secretaries who became nurses. I want to work in a hospital, but I am unsure if nursing is the right career for me. So I thought maybe it would be a good place to start, by becoming doing medical administration. Does it happen often that a secretary becomes a nurse?

A friend of mine did - she's been great!

Specializes in Clinical Research, Outpt Women's Health.

Yes. 25 years ago I transitioned. Good decision.

Specializes in Corrections, LTAC.

I have been working as a Certified Medical Records Specialist (fancy for Medical Secretary or Receptionist) for the past 3 years, I will be graduating with my Associates in Medical Billing and Coding December 4th, 2017...& I'm enrolling BACK into nursing school for next semester (I was previously a student at the school before jumping into the admin side of healthcare)

It's my dream, and I wasn't quite prepared my first go round. Now, I'm more ready than ever.

The sky is the limit, you only live once. And don't live for others, do what you feel is the most logical and most beneficial and enjoyable for you and your family in the long run. Make sure you talk to others in the field of nursing, shadow or inquire with a school of the course workload it entails and the success rate of graduates. Very important you're aware of the commitment. Back to admin side of healthcare...Admin is fun, and you still get to work amongst like minded driven people who have a passion for healthcare. Your contributing in a big way, just not hands on patient care. I missed patient care and interaction with patients and finding happy outcomes for them during their care.

That's my two cents! Good luck in all that you strive to achieve.
