Leaving one career for another .... and nervous!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hello everyone,

My name is Kat and I am new to this site and to the world of nursing. I am currently a dental assistant and have been in the field for the past 15 years. After thoughtful consideration, I have decided to leave dentistry and pursue a career in nursing.

Being a bit older (34yrs) and leaving my comfort zone, does anyone have any suggestions, tips, or advice?

Thanks so much!!

One day at a time is my advice :) I've been in IT for 14 years and been taking pre-reqs part time for the last 16 months.

Most definitely. I just finished intermediate algebra+trig with a B. currently registered for bio summer1. Teas exam dates don't begin until October :)

It helps to look around this site and see you are not alone. There are a lot of 2nd and 3rd career people here. I am 39 and in my first semester of pre-reqs. I will hopefully finish nursing with an accelerated BS in 3 years.

First of all, give yourself credit for making this choice! It's not easy making a big life change at any age. I've found that making time for studying has to be a priority. Researching all of the available nursing program options in your area, including the degree attained, financial aid, acceditation is important. Then, just do things one at a time. It can seem overwhelming, but I try to think "one class at a time" while still keeping my eyes on the end game.

Similar to the other comments, I would suggest to make sure you put your entire focus on becoming a nurse. I have been in IT for 9 yrs and have been working overseas supporting the government and the military. Even though the income is great while in IT, I knew I wanted to be in the healthcare field. I worked fulltime while I finish my pre-reqs for nursing school, and I am starting the program this Fall 2012.

The best advice I can give you is to focus entirely on your pre-reqs and getting into a nursing program. Sometimes I think back about my IT career when things gets rough with school, work, and family, but I know what I want and I just have to take it a day at a time. You have to like what you're doing, and if it's nursing then you should do whatever it takes to be one. Best of luck!

Thank you Melc0305! That is exactly what I am trying to do. One thing at a time. It is a bit overwhelming though. So many schools, different pre reqs, etc.... WOW! =)

Hi Mintyfreshness23, You are right! You have to like what you're doing. Do I like nursing? IDK... I have never done it before, but being in healthcare for so long and knowing that I am compassionate, helpful, and love to make a difference in a person's life.. I think I will like it.

Thank you so much for your input. Greatly appreciated!!!
