I need some opinions.

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi there all,

I am 28, married and the mother of 3. I am taking A&P this summer and doing really well however, I know that mean nothing in terms of how I will do in the nursing program. My question is what steps if any, can I start taking now to help me do well in the nursing program? I apply in a month to begin classes in January.

First off, congrats on your choice to enter the world of nursing! A&P was my favorite pre-req! In regards to preparing for nursing school, ask some first semester students if you can have a copy of their syllabus so that you can get a feel for what information you'll cover when you start. You will have to buy books but I would wait until you are formally accepted to do so. In general, I think you should learn medical terminology. You can google flash cards for that. Also, drug classes will be something you should be learning your first semester so you may want to start reviewing that just to be a little ahead of the game. Finally, enjoy the time you have on your hands (what little you may have with 3 children!) because you will be dedicating every last moment you have to nursing school in the spring! :)

I'm actually taking a Med- term class with A&P and Math this summer. I'm only going to be in Nursing school for 8 credits a semester (if I get in). I made sure to take all the core gen ed courses before hand. Do you think I should volunteer during school to get my foot in the door of a hospital to help compensate for the fact that I'm only getting an ADN right now?

Get your family on board & prepared for your new (more demanding) schedule. If they aren't involved in laundry, meal preparation & other chores, now is the time to make it happen. Brainstorm ways to decrease your day-to-day housework obligations in a way that will not cause major resentment. "WHAT??? you can't make 3 dozen cupcakes for the bake sale tomorrow..... Waaaah You are a horrible mother!" Is hubby ready to be 'first on call' for school emergencies? it will make your life so much easier.
