I feel like its going to be FOREVER before I become a nurse

Hey all-

I'm feeling a little discouraged right now. I have three classes that I need to take before being eligible for a local accelerated BSN program (I'm in the midst of the first one right now). I can't take classes this summer because I'm getting married and will be out of town ~ 2 1/2 weeks. I also feel pressure to continue working full-time to help carry my part of the weight. I can't go down to PT at my current job, and would almost certainly take a pay cut going anywhere else. So...that leaves me taking one class at a time until I finish all three classes...approximately a year and a half from now before I can even apply for the program! There's also no guarantee that I'll get into that program, and, for the other accelerated program in the area, I'd need 6 pre-reqs. (as opposed to the three for this program). UGH! I'm 25, and feel like I'm too old for this. My fiancee is supportive, and we could probably live off of what he makes with me having a part time crappily paid job, although it wouldn't be easy. Should we just bite the financial bullet?

I should probably also add that I took on the CPR training for my company, and they just paid $500 to have me trained as an instructor--I'd feel pretty guilty leaving shortly after they made that kind of expenditure.

Thanks for any advice :)

Hi Guys,

I feel like I am looking into the mirror as I am reading your reply's. I am 28 years old and have my BS In Biology and started a graduate program in Optometry that I coudn't complete. I am up to my ears in loans and debt and recently just got married and moved from the west coast to Pittsburgh. The grad school I attended was not helpful at all. And it is only now that I hear my mom's words about nursing school and the fact that I should have done this all along. I am really confused. I want to try and apply for the BSN accelerated program at the University Of Pitt this fall 2008, any one else applying. But I am hoping this will be a good decision. My husband is worried about the financial burden and me not being able to handle the demands of the program. Anyone else in my spot. I have no nursing experience and still need to write my essay and get my two letters of rec and finish pre-reqs. Can I work in a nursing hospital, is this recommended? Do you have time for family and what is a realistic salary for a BSN and how does the salary ladder work in PA? Has anyone done tuition assistance for this program and how does it work, especially if you want to transfer after graduation from PA to the west coast like Cal or Nevada? Any help would be great or any future nursing students who wanna chat.

DO YOU WANT THIS? Answer that honestly. Then do everything you can to get there- no matter how long it takes. I want to be a Nurse more than anything- I am a single mom- my daughter Alayna is 8- and I had her when I was 20- 8 years later I am just now going back to school. I have to work f/t to take care of us and am taking one class at a time. I am still in the pre-req's Pre-Algebra to be exact. And yes sometimes it feels like I will be doing this forever. But why give up? I know what I want to do with my life- and if I weren't doing this then I'd still prob just be stuck in the same crappy job another 50 years. I'm not ready to do that- not ready to give up in my dreams. Dreams are not acheived overnight and they are WORTH fighting for. Life isn't easy and there are no short cuts. Just be determined and follow through with your dreams- we will all get there someday if we truly desire it. As far as your finances go that is b/t you and your fiance. My SO Brian is currently in the ARMY stationed in El Paso, TX- we talked about me joining him- hopefully soon- and whether or not I would have to work- with him having a daughter and me having a daughter I would most likely have to- but hey I am doing it now and am okay with it. Maybe further on down the road we will cross that bridge when we get there. I don't know if you are religious or not- but I suggest praying about it and what ever path you are supposed to take I pray it is made clear to you. I always pray for God's will in my life and for him to lead me... :redpinkhe

Sorry this is so long. TO sum up- I wouldn't give up on your dreams so quickly- you have to work hard to get what you want- so GOOD LUCK! Hope that helped some!

Yeah..that really does sound like me. In my original post, I forgot to mention that I was in law school for a year, so I feel you on the "up to [your] ears in loans" thing (part of the financial burden I have inhibiting me from going back to school FT). I left and couldn't finish that program for a number of reasons....

How many pre-reqs. do you still need to complete? Some programs will allow you to apply without having them all done. You just need to check the specifics of the program. As luck would have it, the program here just changed their policy, and, as of Spring '09, you have to have all your pre-reqs. done before you can apply (did I mention that is when I could have applied if they hadn't changed this policy?!?).

I, too, am pretty concerned about the rigors of a 14 mth. accelerated program. I'm quite a perfectionist, and get overwhelmed pretty easily, but going the traditional route makes me feel like my BA would have been a total waste. One of the programs I'm looking at also has a 24 mth. option, which I'm considering.

I looked into a tuition assistance program at a local hospital. I'd have to go back into my paperwork, but I think they told me that I would have to commit to working for a year for every semester that they paid for. They didn't give me the specifics of the program, but told me to write again once I was accepted into a nursing program (I got the impression they have alot of people inquire, but only a small percentage that have actually been admitted into a nursing program, and therefore eligible for their assistance incentive).

From what I understand, nursing salary can fluctuate alot based on where you are. I suggest going into the local chats and looking at posts about what people make in your area.

Feel free to PM me, and we can swap more info.!

I am 33 and I am taking a very long route to becoming a nurse, my dream! I have to work full-time to help support the family and I have 2 year old son. While working full-time, I am attending an online respiratory therapy program (fully accredited independence.edu). I have about a year left for this. At that point, I will have a flexible schedule while earning income comparable to what I am earning now. From there, I will take online courses for pre-requisites (check distance education forum, there are a number of accredited/fully transferrable science classes with online labs!) and then apply to nursing school. whew, I will be 37 or 38 before I am done! From there, I want to go on to get my BSN and then apply to school for CRNA, which is ANOTHER two years of school! By then, I will be 42 years old and that's if things all go smoothly and according to schedule (which it never does). But I am taking ONE day at a time to follow my DREAM of becoming a Nurse :) Good luck to us all!
