Community college vs. Sumner College

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I need advice, personal experiences, etc...

I applied to Sumner College (my brother's gf is currently enrolled in their RN program and has nothing but good things to say about it). After doing more research on it though I realized they are a for profit school and the credits do not transfer to any of the major colleges/universities. I really don't have any qualms about people who choose to go about this route, but for me personally, I had always told myself I would never go to one of these types of schools.

So my issues... I still need to take the pre-reqs, which will probably take me well over a year. Then there's always the possibility I will not be accepted into the program (currently I am looking at Chemeketa, but would probably apply to other colleges as well). I guess I am just fearful that I will do all this schooling and have it result into nothing. Or do the schooling and get the same level of job as someone who goes to Sumner. I'm just wondering what hospitals look for when hiring. Do they really look deeply at where you received your education or are they just looking for the licensure?

Is there anyone on here that currently attends Sumner that can give their input on the program? Like I said, I have no qualms about people who choose that route, as I am still possibly thinking of going that route. I just want honest input and feedback.

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

I would stay away from any school whose credits don't transfer. I'm not familiar with that particular school, but in general, those sorts of programs are not well-regarded by management. Save your money, do your prereqs at a community college, and go from there.

Just a friendly heads up, I would change your pic to something anonymous, as anonymity is important on AN. You never know who may come across your posts! :)

Specializes in Hospice, Palliative Care.

Good day, RachMP05:

Ditto on RunBabyRun. I learned the hard way when ZERO (0) of 93 credits transferred from a non accredited school for which I graduated with a 3.98 GPA. Always stick with acredited.

Thank you.

Specializes in ED, Medicine, Case Management.

I have to agree with the pp.'s. I would be exceedingly wary of pursuing an RN through Sumner if their credits will not transfer. While you will have your RN, it leaves you at a significant disadvantage if you decide to go pursue your BSN or other advanced nursing degrees. It is a lot of money to spend for a non-transferable education.

Specializes in ICU.

I would not do it. Depending on your area and the reputation this school has you may not be able to find a job when you are done. Then your credits won't transfer and you would have to start from scratch. It would be a huge waste of money. I know people who have gone to those types of colleges and they are nothing but trouble.

I have friends and coworkers who have attended both types of school, and it's really just a matter of what you find to be the best fit for you. However, Chemeketa is a highly regarded program, and as a current student, I can only say wonderful things about it. It's the only place I applied, and I'm loving every minute of it. Good luck to you!

Hi there!

Did you end up enrolling with Sumner College? I've enrolled into LPN program they have. Classes dont start until December 1 but im still having my doubts.

I have a panel interview at Sumner college to determine if they will choose me for their 4th cohort ADN program next week. I went to one of their info. sessions and was told that they are an accredited school also their website says that they are accredited. They are also affiliated with several programs for further education for RN to BSN bridge.

Can you tell me how Sumner College is going for you so far?

I did not get in. Before the interview I had 8 out of 10 points. The interview was 4 people on the panel and it lasted for over an hour. I was so nervous and one of the interviewers was super rude to me asking me with an attitude of I was nervous or something. Then at the end when they asked me if I had any questions I asked my question and after the same lady slumped back in her chair and loudly said, "Aww I'm so hungry!!" If that's wasn't a sign to never apply again I don't know what is. I traveled from California and she couldn't even answer my questions without making me feel like I was not worth their time. so sad because I really want to live in Portland. :-/

oh wow. Sorry you had bad experience with them. I am enrolled in their LPN program with them right now,2nd term currently, and i only have good things to say about them. They have amazing clinicals instructors who really invest their time and help you out. So far im loving it. The only down side would be the fact that they do change teachers quite often so you have to adjust and relearn teachers teaching styles. Im definitely planning on going further, and enrolling in their bridge RN program.
