CNA Program

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hi. I just recently started going back to school and have decided I want to become a nurse. I work full time and take classes part time so it will be a semi lengthy process for me, but it is worth it. I am still taking pre-reqs right now, but have decided to do the CNA Program this Winter. I have been told it is a great learning experience and being certified will help you get your foot in the door while continuing through nursing school. I guess really what I am looking for are any sugesstions anyone has that has taken and completed this program. Such as:

-Do you recommend doing anything to prepare for the program? Books to read? Texts to study?

-I have heard there is "help" out there for tuition for the program, but I cannot seem to find anything anywhere on it.

-Any other sugesstions?

Any CNA text book will be helpful - by "text book", I mean soft-cover manual with lots and lots of pictures. If you know what program you are going to do and you will be doing it soon, just get the books for your class. Otherwise, you can get cheap older editions at goodwill type stores sometimes or on Amazon. Some of the details might be a little different from state to state or from one year to the next and one publisher to the next but most of the terminology and the basic concepts will be the same.

Or you can get lists of skills from the internet and netsearch them. That is a little riskier because not everyone does things correctly but if you look at a lot of them you can sort it out pretty easily.

In my program, you have to take a CNA course, and honestly, it was easy. I did nothing to prepare and passed with flying colors. I do think it can be helpful, a lot of your first semester clinicals in nursing school involve CNA tasks. It can really help you just kind of get the basics down, and if you work as a CNA while in school, that can greatly increase your chances of getting a job over other applicants.

TO be honest, CNA is sooo and toooo easy you really do not have to do anything to prepare for thisd course. I did votech in hs so when I did do the CNA course afterwards, I already knew everything however, a lot of the girls in my class did well so you will be fine. You could get books to prepare but IMO, I think it is a waste of time because like ive said, the course is to easy. Being a CNA and working in that field will help you get jobs once you are finished nursing school as well as give you a lot of useful skills for when you are in nursing school especailly clinicals. I have to agree with the above comments. I took a CNA course and it was easy. I read the chapters and the information is basic and if you have taken some pre-reqs like A&P it will be a review. As far as the skills part, where I took my class the teachers made sure you had the skill down before they tested you on it. After you pass the class the CNA certification test is not bad either, the written is fairly easy and by the end of the course and clinicals you should have your skills down. Good Luck!

Great! Thank you for all of the advice. Hopefully it is as easy for me as it seems to have been for most people that have taken it. I guess I am more so nervous than anything. SO I am trying to be as prepared as possible. Considering I will be working full time while taking the program!
