Can I take my prereq's online? Where?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Im a 34 yr old SAHM and wanting to return to school for nursing. I need all my prereqs since I have been out of school so long. I was going to take them at my local cc but, since I have 3 small children with their own schedules to work around etc Im thinking taking the prereqs online would be MUCH easier. Is this possible? Has anyone done it? Who did you go through?

Im currently in Dallas,TX if that matter. TIA

Nikki

Yes you can take your pre reqs online.

Check you local community college and see what they offer as far as distance learning. You should be able to take general courses (English, Psychology, History) through an online course or telecourse.

Depending on the instructor you may or may not have to go to campus to take your tests.

For you sciences check out www.Edukan.org. A lot of people on this board including myself have taken classes through them and they are great.

They offer Biology, Chemistry and Anatomy as well as all sorts of other courses.

Good luck to you.

Thanks for the info.

Is Edukan only for KS students? It looks to be affiliated with Kansas colleges somehow?

You can live anywhere and take Edukan courses. Edukan is a consortium of several Kansas community colleges that teamed up to offer accredited AA degree programs online to help out non-traditional students (or anyone who needs to take classes online). They offer just about all general ed prereqs, and the sciences mentioned by the last poster. You simply complete the application, choose a "home" college, and you are in! The cost right now is $115 per unit no matter what course you take. Some classes have prerequisites, so you may need to send in transcripts to prove you have met them, but that's about it. Word of advice: Colby College is a good home college choice because they don't require prereqs for the science classes while some of the others do. I just finished Beginning Algebra and AP1 through Edukan and while I personally didn't think the instructor I had was so great (there are others), it was a good experience and I'll definitely go back there to complete as many of my remaining general eds and sciences that I can.

Good Luck!

This sounds like a great option! Has anyone had trouble getting their Edukan units accepted at their local college?

Some other good options: BYU and LSU both have affordable online courses.

Good luck, and have fun!

Not that I'm aware of...the colleges are fully accredited.

Another one is the CCCsonline system - it's Colorado Community Colleges online. They have a site that's http://www.cccs.edu. There is a link on the left for CCCS online - I haven't gone into that, but I assume it tells you about the program. I have taken two semesters through this system (A&P I, A&P II, Human Growth & Development, & Micro.) and I loved it! You can take them from anywhere (not just CO), but you would just want to make sure that your transcripts would be accepted at the college you plan to attend before going through them.

Let me know if you have any questions - I really loved the program and had great luck with it. Best of luck to you!!! :)
