Can I still get into nursing school?

Hi, so I am new to this website, but I have been reading it for awhile now. Ok so I am really nervous and I am losing hope in ever getting into a nursing school. I am currently going to a community college in California, and have finished my first year of pre reqs. I received 3 C's which from my understanding is really bad. I got a C in Intro to applied statistics, a C in Human Anatomy, and a C+ in Chemistry. I still need to take Physiology, microbiology, and organic chemistry, and I am going to try my very best to get A's in those classes. My question is, is it impossible to get into nursing school with those grades? My GPA currently is 3.2, any suggestions of where I can apply?

3.2 is not a bad average. Getting into nursing school with that , depends on the school and the other applicants averages.

When I applied to nursing school, my GPA counted towards 50 % of the over all considerations.

What is the program considerations at the school you are hoping to attend?

Depends on the school. The school where I taught most recently required a 2.7 average to get in and stay in, along with some other requirements. It also depends on how many apply that have better scores than you do. If there are too many for the available slots, generally people are ranked and the top however-many get in.

Honestly, no CSU will take you with that, especially with Cs in prereqs. The CSU program I attended requires B or above in all prereqs. Each of them will vary, but the chances are slim.

Look at ADN programs through CCs, as most in CA are run on lotteries, meaning that as long as you meet the minimum requirements, you're in the same pot as everyone else, and they basically draw names out of a hat. Then there are the private universities. Just be sure to avoid tech schools (Everest, ITT Tech, etc). Those likely wouldn't be recognized if you wanted to pursue your BSN (something necessary, for the most part, to work in acute care), not to mention the astronomical cost and poor reports from prior students.

It is the C in anatomy that will kill your chances for nursing school admission more than the C's in stat and chem. Look at your options. Retake the anatomy course to raise your grade if you can without penalty at some programs, or with minimal repercussions at other programs.

Welcome to allnurses.com. Have you done introspection as to why you did so poorly in your sciences? Your overall GPA is ok, but at least at our school, doing poorly in sciences is not a good sign to get into the program.

Whether you get in or not, lots of nursing courses are based on the sciences. If you don't have a good understanding of the sciences, understanding your nursing courses will be difficult, and will require you to learn the sciences all over again.
